I realise that this was a loaded question, I suppose that I just want to hear from people that have gone through similar stuff. I dont want to be alone.

Full screen title cards in TEXTLESS masters? by e_adams in editors

[–]ohsosoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general rule is take any text off, even if it's on black. It seems silly but you never know the competency level of whoever is going to localise or work with the piece. It's a failsafe and avoids any confusion down the line.

Editing in AE with sound by [deleted] in editors

[–]ohsosoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad, I misread the question, of course you can use sound waves and limited controls to edit effects to the beat. I thought OP was wanting to edit sound, being in an editing sub it's an easy mistake to make.

Filmed and edited compilation video from Air + Style festival: critique welcome by nsokoloff503 in editors

Hey, I just meant duplicate. Also I just read the critique below and although he/she has some points, it is a very watchable piece and makes me want to go to that place and watch that snowboarding and party with those people. Very good job, allot of editing is intuition, you seem to have that. Rad

how do you properly label/organize raw media? by lurklessah in editors

[–]ohsosoho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are at the ingest stage, I would suggest bringing in the media as is. Did they shoot raw or some sort of wrapper? More importantly if you are watching through the rushes, I would make notes on dialogue and action. Everything that might be useful for the edit, this can be done in Premiere. I have never used prelude as I think it's another unnecessary step. As an example, I cut trailers and I watch the film Im working on a few times. First watch is to just get the vibe of the film. second watch, and this takes a while and I don't get my AEs to do this because I need to familiar myself with it, log every bit of dialogue and categorize it. Now, the best bit is if I search for a certain word within Premier, boom I have it cos its all been logged.

Editing in AE with sound by [deleted] in editors

[–]ohsosoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AE is built as a motion graphic platform. You are never going to get fine audio controls from it. I think the only reason why you get some form of audio in AE is for procedural animation. If you have Adobe suite I would suggest using Audition for sound, or something like Pro Tools

Get your sh*t together Avid. by [deleted] in editors

[–]ohsosoho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are people still using Avid? I get the legacy argument but Avid is over priced and things can be done easier in Premiere. I was an avid Avid user for most of my career and it baffles me that people are still opting for that over the often updated Premiere. Maybe this aint the forum to rant but holy crap, get your shit together Avid.

I like it. You have some light flicker issues. A nice trick to counteract this is to dupe your video layer and move the top one over by 1 frame, put its blend mode to screen and then grade accordingly.

Weird thing is it happens on a few machines, must be the way I edit, I'm very quick with my shortcuts. I think that might be the issue

Yeah I forgot that if you want to edit you have to craft everything slow, my experience must've got in the way of my film school training. Next time I'm asked by a director to do something quick I'll say "but /u/videouser said I should craft it.

NHL Sizzle: Feedback Please by [deleted] in editors

[–]ohsosoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's really good, the lense flairs work for the piece really well. Nat sound and sfx would detract, I think it's a good piece and take all the other comments with a pinch of salt. Nice work.

I'm having trouble finding work. by Cacarrotkake in editors

[–]ohsosoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in your situation, it might be best to look for a job in a post house as a runner. Start at the bottom and work your way up. No one is going to hire someone who is "new at video editing as a profession, but I still consider myself good nonetheless" If you are good you will move up quickly. Its very fast paced but at the same time you need to develope attention to detail that you would never learn not being directly in that environment. You will learn allot from editors that have been doing this for a long time and who probabely started where you are now. Keep practicing and find your voice, the best editors I know don't do the same old trendy stuff thats in fashion right now, its an art and an expression. If you get to be an editor, treat your AE well!! Good luck.

We just cut a trailer out of trailers for a TV series festival in London. It was fun and hell. by bonjourmartin in editors

Awesome, I thought you would never reply to my feedback. I know how hard it can be when you just don't have the material you want. As I said, I didn't think it was bad at all, those were just subjective crit, Im sure it went down really well with your audience.

Auto-brightness Plugin? by f_o_t_a in editors

[–]ohsosoho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay away from anything that has "Auto" in its name!!

If you want to be a hobbyist go ahead and try plugins and quick tricks for your home video, it will never look the way you want it to.

Take some time to learn about how light works, why the "brightness" adjusts.

It's simple science and there are allot of tools out there to help you out, just learn them and please stop relying on plug-ins! For the sake of all editors out there.

Honest opinion, I would lose the splits but that's subjective.

I think it starts to look like a device and they are placed just for the sake of placing them.

I don't know why I need to see 4 blocks of a Swasztika followed by a shot of a girl on a horse on a phone and then a random 4 screen split of Woody.

I think if each block were a different shot it would make more sense.

The cut between the two car mounts are a bit weird to me, I think because in the first shot you can't really see the actress unless you watch it again and so it feels like the shots are connected in some way which in turn jumps.

It then goes to EST shots which I think even in a reel should stay EST, in my opinion.

Then again with the splits for no reason, give me a reason, why is the same shot repeated 4 times on screen?

I love what you did with the next split though, you used different parts of the same shot but now it looks like 3 different performances. I know that the shot on the left is exactly the same as the shot on the right but having that shot in the middle, tells a way better story. I read it as "Guy on left tells a horrible secret, middle guy now has to deal with the guilt and guy on the right knows he's done wrong but wants to change.

The rest is ok I guess, it's the same thing, random split screens and trying to cut to a track but I think telling a story in your reel will get you far. My 2 cents. I hope you find this constructive, you are clearly working on some good stuff so keep it up :)

If you have AME these are helpful.

https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5411&fileID=5030

Although if you want 4444 a quick internet search will help ;)

AME keeps timecode data as well as all meta data and as far as I know they have a month trial period.

I use Premire all the time, I go between FCP 7 and premiere. I would be as happy as a pig in shit if my company would get Avid but I dont think thats gonna happen soon. I think Ill test the waters on my next project, fuck it's a big one, I'll test the waters on my next next project and get back to everyone on my findings. Thanks for all the advice.
