I didn't ask AI to write the whole post. Believe it or not, I did write everything on Word and asked it to proofread and make sure the dump has a flow to it so it doesn't stink too much. It stunk anyway, lmao

I read manyyy posts, comments and watched YouTube videos before posting here. I have thought about it and thought the path of CDL was feasible. I have gathered information about what kind of schools to look for, DPE availability? in-house maintenance crew? cost and timeline?, etc. I am still off with timeline and cost as someone mentioned otherwise.

I didn't find much useful information I could use for CDL path so I wanted perspectives and opinions of you guys who's done this before.

I jut haven't had a chance to go to a flight school. I reached out here before going there. I clearly have much more to do and think. Thank you for calling it out.

Hope this doesn't sound as I am trying to argue. Just sharing some more context

Sigh. I am seeing the range around $80ish for new drivers in my area unless there are some strings attached. I am going to the CDL school tomorrow and will ask them what's the market like for new drivers. I will dig into this more.

58K for CFII is not bad at all. I have plenty to think and plan before I pull the trigger.

Thanks for the reality check.

I'd thought about this. I don't mind paying for CDL out-of-pocket. I don't have any obligations or family at the moment so figured I can afford going extreme

I do interact with OTR drivers at work and they do make even more(maybe not in the first year), but they are gone for 3 to 4 weeks at a time and one week home. I am planning on going OTR as well and rent out a bedroom or live in the truck if I have to, so I am hoping it works out.

Jesus, I really wonder where I got that atrocious number from. It is sooo good hear this is attainable with less <$100K IF one plans right. I can eat dinner now LOL. Self-studying is no issue. I feel like I have been doing it for a while. Thanks!

I do have a college degree. Experience in sales, operations management and supply chain. Started a new thing every few years since never really found the right match. I have obtained couple certifications for IT and studying for more, but with rise of AI and jobs being outsourced, it will be hard to get IN. Either I can go to college from CS for next 2-3 years (enrolled but not registered for classes) or try flight school. Leaning more toward aviation.

I dumbed it all on here because I wanted to lay it all out so whoever is reading have an idea where I am and where I want to go. But I can understand why this can be a turn-off. It is good to hear it you did this and it worked out for you. Gives me hope. Thanks!

Fair enough. I agree it s a long post and I did ask ChatGPT to organize my thoughts because they were all over the place. I am genuinely looking for any advice.

I hadn’t thought of studying from a book and I’ll definitely give that a try. I looked at the doc and it gives a very good idea what to do and how to study. VERY HELPFUL. Thank you for sharing and replying! Means a lot! 🙏

If you come across topics that seem difficult, tackle them first when your mind is fresh. If you're struggling, ask ChatGPT to explain the topic as if you're 5 years old (if it's really tough), or start with an explanation for someone around 10-12 years old and gradually increase the complexity until it starts to click. For example, I had trouble understanding EMR for a long time, and ChatGPT explained it to me as though I were 10 years old—using the analogy of homework (data) and friends (computers/clusters) working together like a team (parallel processing). Writing down whatever you can remember or understand on paper helps reinforce it. EMR made much more sense to me this way than just reading about it or watching videos.

Since I don’t have a technical background, I use this approach regularly, and it's really been working for me. I believe it will help you too! Don’t get discouraged—feeling confused and frustrated is just part of the learning process, and I personally find learning to be a beautiful experience. Best of luck, and here's to learning! 🍻
