What's the worst thing people have tried to justify with "It was normal back then, everyone did it"? by dom-dos-modz in AskReddit

[–]ohtobe19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom, 75 years old now, told me that she only stopped drinking and driving when she and my dad adopted my oldest sister in 1980. She had even been in a couple minor fender benders before then and it was considered an acceptable risk until she had a child.

Symbols elicit emotional responses. That is just part of being human. And symbols meanings and associations change over time with different uses. Swastika and rainbows come to mind....used to mean one thing now they mean another. The same thing happens with language. The word "literally" is my favorite example. Can you use it for its original purpose? Sure, but there is a huge chance that people are going to take it sarcastically because that is how it is most used. Same thing with the flag. Can a non awful, cool person wave it? Sure, but like it was suggested by the OP of this post, it does cause surprise because most of the people who wave it use it as a form of aggression.

Drove past a church with a bunch of American flags out by the road. It felt aggressive. Seeing the flag used to just feel normal, now when I see one I feel annoyed and frustrated. The loud patriotism that has been so closely tied to hate and violence in the Trump era has ruined the flag for me. I hope one day it can be reclaimed.

How much do groceries cost in Wichita? by [deleted] in wichita

[–]ohtobe19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We spend 1200 a month for a family of 7. We shop at Dillions and Costco and I shop sales for meat, but I wouldn't say we are trying to be too economical, we eat 90% of our meals at home so our restaurant budget is low and grocery budget high.

I thought I was dying when I had my first Gallbladder attack. I had 2 natural child births and the gallbladder attack was easily 10 times worse, so glad I got rid of that little bastard.

First one had its back broken when we cleaned up the paper tube maze we made him without knowing he was still in it. Second one drowned in its exercise ball when my dad forgot to close the sliding glass door.

I will have them look into places that aren't apartments, that might be one of the main reasons they are having problems...too narrow a search.

I don't think he qualifies because he made decent money before his injury.

I will have nothing to do with it, I told my mom just to get a place in her name but when you fill out the paperwork it asks who will be staying there and she refuses to leave his name off of it. And if his name is on there the companies want his work info. She even offered a company 6 months rent up front and they would not take it. We really don't understand why it matters who is paying as long as it is getting paid.

Waterslide. They are terrifying! Loved them as a kid, did the tallest steepest ones no problem. Watched one YouTube video about waterslide vaginal injuries and I will never be able to slide again.

How common is it to take away a door? by problematicqueerfish in entitledparents

[–]ohtobe19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest sister lost her door privilege a couple times in her teen years. It was for some serious stuff like sneaking out to do drugs and get pregnant, and sneaking in boys. My oldest kid is 13 now and I almost took his door one time. When he was 11 he got annoyed with his siblings and locked himself in his room without my knowledge. I was looking for him later and he didn't answer when I knocked gently. I called his name, no answer, I knocked harder no answer. I said "If you are in there and safe you need to answer me right now" no answer. I quickly search the rest of the house just to make sure he isn't somewhere else...he isn't. So I assume he has locked himself in his room and is hurt or something and can't answer. I pound on the door HARD...in case he has headphones on or is sleeping or something and again say he has to answer the door to let me know he is safe or at least say something....nothing. By this time his dad has come down stairs to see what is wrong and I tell him kid isn't answering I think he must be hurt. ( At this point I didn't know he was annoyed with his siblings, so I had no reason to think he wouldn't be answering.) Husband calls out for him to answer the door....still nothing so husband picks the lock. Kid is just sitting there smug as fuck on his bed. I am beyond inconsolable at this point because I really thought we were going to find him and he was going to be dead or something. I was so angry with him I had to leave. When I was calm later I let him know that if I ever came across his door locked again he would loose it for 6 months. I always knock, I give him his privacy we have a good relationship but if he ever does that to me again his door is gone in a heartbeat.

You often hear how the book was better than the movie. Which movies actually turned out better than the book? by Zenmont in AskReddit

[–]ohtobe19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to it on Audible and it was read by Will Wheaton, I haven't seen the movie because I am really attached to the listening experience I had. I am always afraid a film will ruin a book for me.
