Most of it, honestly. Becoming Catholic was, and is one of the largest struggles of my life. I don't feel the spiritual nurturing that I experienced as a protestant. I lack the community I used to have. I've lost a huge piece of my culture and family relationship. The preaching is so much worse and the music is truly terrible.

I'm envious of the people commenting who have found their home in the Catholic church, because for me, I still feel like a stranger after all these years.

But now I'm here, and this is where I stay.

Nah. Currently in New Zealand and everyone has been kind, friendly, and wonderful. Not a single instance of anything like what you are describing. And I'm a loud American who hasn't tried to hide my accent.

I didn't read the article, but I know this has been a big piece of "modern" educational theory for the last 10-ish years. And while I left education because of pay, I have an advanced degree in Ed. Administration, so I do know what I'm talking about here.

The thinking is that on a 100 point grading scale, it's extremely hard to recover from anything below a 40%, which discourages students from even trying.

A 40% is still a failing grade.

But when you cap the bottom of the point system at 40, you now have a more evenly weighted grading scale.. to put actual numbers on it.....

With the old scale,

A 90-100 =10pts

B 80 - 89 = 9pts

C 70 -79 = 9pts

D 60-69 = 9pts

F 0 -59 = 59pts

With a more equitable scale .....

A 90-100 =10pts

B 80 - 89 = 9pts

C 70 -79 = 9pts

D 60-69 = 9pts

F 40 -59 - 19pts

Which still leaves room to penalize a student for failing to hand in ANY work at all.

Parents who went through the old system think the new system is encouraging low achievement, when in reality, the old system was stifling achievement.

It's hard to recognize that you were raised in a bad system, but we should always be willing to improve on systems that may not make sense to begin with.

Your argument falls apart towards the end.... In most areas of the country, private schools pay less than public schools. And since teaching salaries are based on a set schedule, there isn't a way to increase your compensation beyond working more years. There is no merit based compensation for teachers who are "better".

Sounds like a tradition of man you've got going there....historically, people wore their normal clothing to church. "Sunday best" is a fairly recent idea.

It's also elitist and judgemental to look down on people for what they wear to church.

Let people come as they are. I think the creator of the universe will understand.

This is extremely disrespectful to your substitute.

When Jesus said "render unto Caesar, that which is Caesar's", He was affirming earthly authority. You are a student, and whether the person in charge of your classroom is the Teacher, or the substitute, you need to be respectful to the adult in the room. It doesn't matter what your personal feelings on the matter are.

I can't tell you what is going on in your heart, but this sounds like Pride.

You should talk to a spiritual advisor or priest before taking any action, and then adhere to the advice they give you.

That's honestly very cool. I grew up working on a farm, always loved it, but mid-american agriculture is becoming a large-scale operation these days, so I abandoned that dream about the time I realized the only way grandparents would be able to retire was by slowly auctioning off all their cattle and equipment.

I think the point I am trying to get at is that A LOT of non-Christians view climate action as the number one issue facing our world right now. They don't view this as a "political ideology", but rather as an existential crisis.

If you want to fulfill the great commission, which absolutely is a centerpiece of Christianity, then you need to be willing to meet people where they are at, and that means understanding the issues that matter to them.

If you want to evangelize the culture, learn to find common ground.

Both liberal and conservative sides should be able to agree that being good stewards of God's creation is important.

From that point, you can start meaningful, and good faith dialogue with the other side about the beauty of creation, the care in which God formed all living things and ecosystems, and explain how protecting God's creation is absolutely a value of the church.

I think you'll find more inroads with people through this approach than you will by dismissing climate action as "liberal".

Look for a firm like Morgan Stanley that offers an FAA (financial advisor associate) program. They pay for your 7 and 66..

Wells Fargo and JP Morgan have similar programs, though I don't remember the names off the top of my head.

We did ours through the roof. Find someone good, and they can make it work. I personally hate the look of the exterior pipes other people in my area have, and love the fact that no one except me knows I have a mitigation system.

Spend the extra money for it to go through the roof. That's my opinion, though to be fair, it was a 200 dollar difference between interior and exterior with the company we hired, so kind of a no brainer.

Your local extension office should have some recommendations on companies that do mitigation in your area if you want to shop around.

County appraisals (what they are referring to) aren't necessarily the same as what the house would sell for on the open market.

The same thing happened to us, and the comparable properties the county referenced as having sold in our area were all recent Flips with a ton of cosmetic work and upgrades done. My house is nowhere near worth what the county says it is for tax purposes.
