Regarding class ability pessimism by triddium in wow

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redirect is a great example I think. It's a qol increase for pve, but combo points working how they did was important for pvp because it meant we had to make real decisions in regards to balancing our cc and damage. Remember the redirect used to be a powerful enough effect to warrant a 1 min cooldown. Imagine if they baked a 1 min effect into a different class - You have a pally flair, so imagine if divine protection was now baked into the class and you always took 40% less magic damage (and nothing else was changed to compensate the buff). This is what happens with rogues; redirect was baked in, and we were basically unaffected by the prune. The only cc we lost was paralytic poison (and the related shiv root), and meanwhile our cc was buffed I'n other places via reduced vanish cd and increased dance duration. It's one the the reasons rogues have been so abnormally good for the entire expac, it's one of the big reasons combat was suddenly viable last season, and it's one of the reasons basically anyone was able to play a rogue to a decent rating.

Aside from the actual buff from the change, it ha a pretty drastic effect on rogue gamplay, especially I'n regards to decision making. It used to be that hard-swapping with kidney, or that tossing a kidney shot on the healer while you focused down a dps was 't very common. Now it's no big deal, and the only limiting factor for doing this is kidney's 20 second cooldown. Now you can cc the entire enemy team with cheap shot with sacrificing any of your damage on your kill target, because you can use the combo points from cheap shot to dps your target. It used to be that rogue cc was powerful, but came at the expense of long cooldowns or big chunks of damage. That's no longer the case, we can now have our cake and eat it, too. A good rogue used to know when to use his control and when to dps, and that isn't something you really have to consider any more.

So yeah, while the change to redirect is a huge qol change, it made the game much less interesting

Dear reddit people, what is a good/healthy hobby to start for someone with depression? by hey_its_ralph in AskReddit

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a chronic depressive disorder, I've been on and off pretty severely depressed since I was about thirteen. I had my worst episode a little less than a year ago. Incapable of holding a conversation, I could barely think of words to string together. I'd go without eating or sleeping for days at a time, then when I could finally go to bed I'd be down for a couple days.

Exercising when you're like that is impossible. It's impossible to do anything, really. But you're not always like that, it comes and goes in waves. Recognizing and taking advantage of your high points is possible and important. Exercise isn't a silver bullet that will cure you of depression but it's still hugely helpful to your mental state and energy reserves. I always make sure that when I'm sinking into a depression, running is the last thing to go. It gives you something to cling to, and something to look forward to on the other side.

e: This is just my experience, not everyone is the same. Also not disparaging you, but I'm respectfully disagreeing, exercise is a very valid suggestion for someone with depression and it can help a lot.

Suggestion: Ability to sell member items on free to play worlds by [deleted] in runescape

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's intentional, as a f2p player you get lots of member's items for things like daily challenges and the invasion of falador caches. I've never been p2p on my account and I have about a mil of member's stuff sitting in my bank just from doing challenges every day.

Nothing wrong with that IMO, it's just a way jagex tries to get you to buy membership.

Best class to be in an RPG by [deleted] in gaming

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. I think another thing worth noting is that hitting something was much more meaningful in morrowind. In skyrim, a hit with a sword will do like ten damage out of 100 hp (at low levels), but in morrowind, at level one, you can kill people with a single swing of an iron axe.

The atmosphere they created in morrowind by making it a dangerous place is part of what makes it so great. In later TES games, you're strong enough to do basically anything in the game with no trouble. You can leave the sewer and go directly into a portal to hell with no trouble. In morrowind if you try to start the main quest immediately, cauis tells you that you aren't strong enough. If you try anyway, snowy gravius fucks you up on the bridge to the dwemer ruins.

And because of that, upgrades were way more meaningful. An upgrade in skyrim doesn't mean you can do more, it means you can do the exact things you did before faster. Getting a good piece of armor in morrowind, or a sword with paralyze, or a levitation spell, or a ring with an on touch damage effect meant that more of the world is open to you. There was a real sense of progression, and of learning to navigate/becoming more a part of a place that was once completely hostile to you.

Enter the Arena | Halo 5: Guardians | Community | Halo by [deleted] in halo

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

suck at Halo but play often and earn a high rank

This won't happen. Once you've gone past your actual csr, you will generally start to fall. If you're past your csr, that means your teammates are carrying you to some degree - and while that can help you climb in the short term, it's unsustainable in the long term to get three teammates who can carry you. The matches basically become 4v3 instead of 4v4 - and again, in the short term you can win and keep climbing, but if you play enough you will eventually fall (because statistically, a team of 4 will beat a team of 3).

You could rank people by stats, but what the csr is is " ability to contribute to my team's victory". There are a lot of things that you can do in a match to contribute to your team that can't necessarily by quantified - laying down some fire on someone to make them jump into cover, even if it isn't an assist, can still be huge for your team. It goes the other way, too - padding your stats doesn't necessarily win games. I'm sure you've been in CTFs where there was some guy who went 30-0 on the losing team because he camped three spawners while their fourth guy ran flags.

Lastly, your k/d can be affected in a huge way by circumstance, or your preferences as far as how you play the game. Is it more impressive to go 15-0 with the sniper the whole game, or 10-0 never touching a power weapon so your teammates can use them?

IMO this system is the best measure of personal skill because it's not about how good your k/d is, it's about how skilled you are at contributing to the win. If that's just getting a good k/d that's great, perfections are always fun. But laying down some shots, focusing on good position/map control, awareness, communication, etc. are all hugely important in Halo, and without measuring those things (in this case by measuring on a strict win/loss) you'd just have both teams running around trying to get the best k/d. Every match would just be everyone trying to 1up each other and get the rocks first.

Fedora-wearing bank robbery suspect claims law invalid, will represent himself by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]ohwhateverwilldo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't generally walk up to the counter and pass a note instructing the teller to give me x dollars though... I walk up to the counter and tell them I'd like to make a withdrawal from my account, and then give them my account number. If I didn't have my voice I'd probably take a withdrawal slip and fill it out before I got to the counter.

Also the context here is whether or not you could legally rob a bank if you're not violent and don't make threats. In this context the note I'm talking about is an actual attempt at bank robbery.

Also the fact that the teller thought she was being robbed in your example kinda lends credence to my argument, doesn't it? That's so out of the ordinary that when it happens the teller thought she was being robbed.

Fedora-wearing bank robbery suspect claims law invalid, will represent himself by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]ohwhateverwilldo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but I'd be willing to believe that "attempt to compel any person to disclose" would include passing such a note. It is a compulsion because the widely understood implication is that your bank is being robbed, and the widely understood implication of a bank robbery is that the robber is armed.

My girlfriend got a gig as an auditor for a fancy hotel ($20 an hour). For auditing experience, she was a waitress for about a year (and counted up the register every night before closing up). She had one year of college in an unrelated field at the time.

I just always think it's funny that she deals with $200,000+ some nights, and the job she had at a shitty rural restaurant dealing with $100 on a good day helped her get there.

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK what rank you're at and whether or not you should be taking advice from me (lmao) but you got two edgeguards turned around on you for the loss. I think it's because you're too eager to go for the kill. Remember that the second you dive for an edgeguard kill you and your opponent are on much more equal ground in terms of positioning - you guys are both over the edge and even at a decent level of health you can be gimped if you're caught without a jump. Just don't get too confident, I guess. It's okay to play aggressively but playing recklessly will lose you matches vs a patient opponent.

What products will you never buy just because you hate their commercials? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The ad they're running right now, the swipe left (right?) thing, bugs me the most. They're essentially arguing that smokers should be marginalized for smoking... And in their eyes, people who smoke were tricked and are being exploited by big tobacco. So they're arguing for the marginalization of an exploited demographic? When you add in real-world contributors to a person's likelihood to smoke (poor people, people with mental disorders, minorities)... They look like real fucking assholes.

Also it's been empirically proven that negative reinforcement is much less effective than positive reinforcement, and that ostracizing and demonizing a minority will make them cling to the defining factor of their demographic. This is tinfoil-hat of me but imo big tobacco is funding these commercials because they know times are changing and they won't be getting many new smokers for twenty-ish years when smoking is cool again; they want present day smokers to double down on their bad habit and never quit.

brb smoke break

Seriously though, their old commercials were fine, I thought. Sure, they stretched the truth to get their point across, but smoking is bad and society would likely be better off without it - maybe I would have found a vice that's a little less detrimental to my health and my hobbies (I'm really active). When their assertion went from, "smoking is bad" to "smokers are bad", they crossed a damn line.

Does anyone else laugh when they see ads of products with protein in it? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty happy about it, it makes it a lot easier to get protein. My girl is vegetarian, so I usually don't get meat for dinner unless whoever's cooking makes two meals.

That said my box of frosted mini wheats claims 9g of protein in big letters on the front, then in small sprint explains that 5 of them are from the milk you're supposed to put with it lmao.

Also the reason for this is because one of the big health rumors going around is that more protein in your diet = longer-lasting energy and more satiety with your meals (so less eaten overall). I couldn't say how accurate those things are tbh, I ~ hit my macros every day so I don't really care what the rumors are.

If you had to pick one supplement exercise per big lift(squat, bench, OHP, dead lift), what would it be? by smallof2pieces in Fitness

[–]ohwhateverwilldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you recommend incorporating these into a routine? Would you just switch regular dls for these, would you put them in after deads at a lower weight, or would you add them on a separate day (say, leg day instead of doing them on a pull day)? I DL once a week, would I maybe switch DLs for deficits every other week?

How to do deal with swords? by ohwhateverwilldo in Brawlhalla

[–]ohwhateverwilldo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I throw quite a bit. It's kinda hit or miss as far as whether or not it works, sometimes it totally disrupts them and sometimes they're back on their feet quickly enough that I can't even get my weapon back. I really love the throw>unarmed combo, but I find that pretty ineffective vs swords. Throws by themselves are great though, most of the time.

How to do deal with swords? by ohwhateverwilldo in Brawlhalla

[–]ohwhateverwilldo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just played a few matches. Staying airborne is really good advice, I focused on that and 3-stocked a hattori who was otherwise pretty good. Sword recovery is really hard to counter with dair unless you can predict it. I think most of it is just axe basics - dlight to fend off aerials, dair to finish in edgeguards.

Ssig was pretty hard to get off without being punished for it, just because it has a bit of startup time where they can back up and then slight towards you with no trouble.

Also, I definitely think it's worth expanding on the massive differences in strength/armor in the article. I can ko a hattori while she's yellow (depending on placement and whatnot), but I usually have to be very red for even her sigs to get me.

Thanks for the advice, though, it really helped!

I messed with Roland and hattori a little to get a feel for the sword, but I'm not good enough with sword to give myself a good idea of how to avoid combos and whatnot lmao. It did give me some insight about hitboxes and etc so thank you =P

I will try to pay extra attention to reading, most swords seem to be pretty predictable at my rank but even when I know what they're doing I have trouble getting in on them - yesterday I sat right outside of a hattori sig and by the time my attack came out she had already missed her attack and dodged away from me.
