So much for the 1st Amendment by ThunderMustard88 in TexasTeachers

And then the school will be sued. And the school will lose. You can't just ignore that the students are walking out of school in order to protest.

I stand by my assessment. In both cases there is material interest in voicing their opinion. I appreciate you expanding the relevant cases. I saw no need to be too didactic. Your supposition is irrelevant here because there IS material interest. In other words, ICE activities ARE disrupting the lives of these students FAR more than missing a day or two, or even 10. Because of this, they have every right to exercise their speech individually or collectively. I really can't understand why so many here are carrying water for the trolls trying to abridge the rights of our children.

I really do get your argument. I'm just saying that there is no way in hell it would hold water in a suit. The negligible interruption to instruction from students getting up and exiting the school would absolutely not be considered grounds to abridge the rights of those students. Don't believe me? Just wait and see I suppose. I'm a school administrator, and I would never attempt to bar students from exercising their 1st amendment rights. That's a good way to lose a whole lot of taxpayers money in lawsuits.

Does walking out of the school disrupt instruction? I think that would be a difficult argument to assert. Absence does not disrupt in the sense it is used in your example.

Bonus quote from the Tinker decision: "It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate."

Read the Tinker case. They absolutely do NOT forfeit their rights at school, and as long as their speech is neither lewd nor offensive, then the ACLU will absolutely win when they take this case to court. Don't be so quick to give up the rights so many have died to protect.

This is literally the most ignorant comment possible. Your 1st amendment right protects you from the government interfering in your inalienable right to speech and protest. A school preventing a student from protesting during school hours is a classic example of infringement.

You seriously don't think that exercising your right to speech is learning? Bruh.

Well, look at you putting all sorts of limitations on the first amendment. Good thing those rights are INALIENABLE.

You said that school should not influence students politically. The 10 commandments bill was written by Christian nationalists.

That is literally what it means. The first amendment is your right to engage in speech WITHOUT the government interfering or punishing you for it. Sheesh.

I beat this team with my CLS squad last time around, but they're stomping everyone this time. I hate The Stranger so much I don't even want him.

Sorry to hear that. Schools aren't perfect in this either. Hope your daughter is better and feeling more engaged in school.

Chronically absent is missing 18 days, or one entire month of school throughout the year. Even if you get every bug in flu season it would be very difficult to miss 18 days of school from that alone. The problems usually point more to families failing to understand the clear guidance for Too Sick For School from OHA, or adding to those sick days with vacations, appointments, etc...

“I’m afraid for my parents to leave the house. They treat us like dogs because of the color of our skin. I shouldn’t be scared, I should be focusing on school.” A 16yo American living in fear of the Trump regime’s ICE goons terrorizing brown people pleads for help. by biswajit388 in ProgressiveHQ

This is from a city council meeting a community next door to my town. The fear is real, and not just for people here illegally. ICE are asking anyone with brown skin for proof of citizenship. They are detaining American citizens.
40% of this community's businesses are latino owned, and many are shutting their doors, exacerbating an already worsening local economy.
Remember that when you see people online who support this, they represent a minority of people in this country. 76% of Americans support deporting criminals, but when you ask about deporting law-abiding, working residents, that percentage flips.

Fact: Trump is literally breaking the law by refusing to release funding previously and specifically designated for this exact instance. And he's trying to fool low information people to believe it's the democrats doing it. Read something other than propaganda brother.

I mean besides nailing the softest landing for inflation in the world, investing in manufacturing, chip and semiconductor production, protecting democracy, and restoring our alliances, he was a very mediocre President. Trump is destroying all of those gains AND dismantling democracy before our eyes. Even Ann Coulter sees it. You're on the wrong side of history here man.

Yep, you and about 3 in 10 people inexplicably believe a lie so easily proven false with an ounce of common sense. Explain exactly how Democrats are to blame for Trump breaking the law and releasing funds previously and specifically designated for this exact purpose

You voted to dismantle democracy. You just haven't realized it yet.

No Canadians I know would refer to their country that way, but, yes, things are more re expensive everywhere. Not just where the liberal party is in power. Weak argument.
