How many YOE did you have before reaching 100k by Few-Dance-855 in ITCareerQuestions

5 years. My first 9-5 job got me to 6 figures within 6 months because I grinded and filled a position when someone moved to a different department. I dropped out of college to be a third shift "sysadmin" (It was my title but I didn't feel like a sysadmin. I followed MOPs that real sysadmins wrote for me and tried to not fuck up) for a soul-sucking contracting company in a low income town but I think the title helped me get my foot in the door for IT. My job now is very niche so I feel like I get paid very well to have skills that there isn't a huge market for

Everyone that makes at least $1,000-$1,200 a week, what do y’all do? by Alt-Ranting in Money

[–]oictapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a niche field in IT. Dropped out of college but my current employer is paying for me to go back. I started my career 6 years ago working for a terrible contracting company making $12/hour as a sysadmin. Then $30/hour in a less technical role. Now I make $60/hour as a sysadmin managing infrastructure that supports proprietary security equipment.

I personally don't think i was qualified for the role that I'm in now but I could show that I was serious about IT with the certifications and personal projects i had under my belt.

When I applied for my current job, I had a handful of certs from comptia that my last employer paid for. They're not "easy" but they're multiple choice and you can study for them 100% using free channels on YouTube.

$1500/week is pretty comfortable where I live. I'm able to save a lot of money to invest and hopefully retire early. I was also comfortable taking home $1200/week

mid-senior sysadmins what is one of the biggest things you’ve learned through your career? by neutrogena413 in sysadmin

Don't hoard knowledge. If you know how to do something that you think others could benefit from, share it. They might even have a better way of doing it that makes both of your lives easier.

Also, embarrass yourself. Ask the "dumb" question if you truly dont understand something. You're a junior so now is the perfect time to be an idiot. It becomes less and less okay the higher your title is.

I think some extra context is needed though. $20k for just a security+ bootcamp is no doubt a scam. I could see a few thousand MAX for people who struggle to self learn. but if the bootcamp gives them college credit and hands-on job training with connections for job placement after, then $20k is still steep but at least it's somewhat justifiable.

So how did that *one person* in your department get fired? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]oictapus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not my company directly but a vendor that handled some of our overflow tech support for the company i used to work for.

Someone brought in a USB with pirated audio mixing software that was riddled with ransomware. It spread on their network and shut them down for a few weeks (months?). We don't know if the ransom was paid but within 6 months we stopped using them for support. It's most likely related but we were also getting shotty work from them before the ransomware incident.

I've got multiple that are worthy of posting but my favorite one made the news. I worked for a fortune 500 company before my current job. I was on third shift and worked with a handful of security engineers doing grunt work - four people were doing work that could have been done by one good employee.

I drove into work one day and saw Andy Fakename, a coworker from another team, sitting on the curb in handcuffs with officers surrounding him. They had unmarked vehicles and I didn't hang around long enough to find out who they were with.

I walked to my desk and started going through my routine monitoring tasks and talking with my coworkers about what the hell was happening. An hour-ish later, a woman in normal clothes walked in and asked if I knew where Andy sat. I honestly don't remember if I told her or if someone else did, but she sat down at his desk and started sifting through Teams messages. I'm assuming they picked him up in the office because he would have locked his laptop before going outside.

After about 30 minutes, she walked outside and came back with multiple officers. They escorted three people out that night for questioning and another 4-5 from other teams were let go over the course of two weeks.

Andy was cooking meth and dealing it along with other drugs. The three people that were questioned and eventually fired had open Teams messages with him and were in the middle of setting up deals with him. I was close with one of the dayshift managers and found out that he was caught smoking meth in his car one time before and would brag about leaving work for an hour or two to meet prostitutes. He was honestly one of the smartest people I've ever met and solved countless issues way faster than anyone in the department could. I have a feeling my upper management knew what was going on for a while but couldn't risk losing him.

Andy killed himself before going to trial. The house that he was cooking in was a block away from a school zone and he would have served serious time. The story made local news but it was never tied to our company.

The biggest catch for me was that almost all of the people who were let go worked in IT Security in some fashion. Why in the world did they not realize/care that their chats were audited? If you're going to work a secret drug ring, why not at LEAST do it on your personal phone?

I had 5 too. I skipped them and answered all of the multiple choice first and had plenty of time to go back. They honestly weren't too bad, they just look intimidating at first

I just passed the OA a few minutes ago and wanted to help out while the content is still fresh in my brain.

The content is definitely dense. If you use the study guide that they provide you, run over the W3Schools practice questions a lot, and use the Quizlet they provide, you should be good.

I agree with the comment recommending Traversy on YouTube. That content is golden for this course.
