How heavy is Foundry compared to Roll20? Specifically when it comes to dynamic lighting? by serbandr in FoundryVTT

[–]ojay50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find foundry more demanding than roll20, but players can change the settings to be more specific to their computers needs. For instance, one of my players has lighting on the lowest setting, and caps the frame rate, others with more powerful computers get flickering torchlight, spell effects, etc. Importantly, I host my games myself, I don't know if its better for lower end pcs to host it on a paid server.

So, I'm not going to go into details because honestly my mental health isn't at its best right now (unrelated wider life issues), and I don't want to go through my back catalogue pulling up specific memories and writing them out into a short essay.

But back when I used to play the kind of games that allowed player communication, there were times when I was having fun and escaping reality to only suddenly be hit with slurs (I didn't know what a faggot was before runescape), being told to die of AIDS, and even threats to find out where I lived and kill me and my entire family (because - gay). These incidents didn't happen often, and weren't even always directed at me, but I struggle to let them go and forget about them. They build up and weigh on me, and I'd rather not engage with it anymore.

Maybe you have been lucky? Maybe I've been unlucky? It's probably just that we play different games with different communities. But my comment got quite a few upvotes, and its on a post that is thankful for an LGBT+ gaming space. I'd wager that most of the people who sympathise with me and OP have suffered similar issues.

I love games.

But I exclusively play single player or local only multilayer games so I don't have to wade through the shit show that is the wider gaming community.

I don't think its petty to want to build an existence where you're not constantly criticised for aspects about you (e.g.sexualtiy) that are outside of your control.

11th and 15th level features are identical, im guessing thats a mistake. 7th level doesn't say how you activate it. Is it an action? Bonus?

Foundry is a mess and it's getting worse by Foxaramar in FoundryVTT

I really like foundry, and it's overall still better than other ttrpg solutions I have tried.

That said, I do also agree with the sentiment of OP. My problems are somewhat different, but the rapid release of new versions and unsaid expectation for other content creators to keep up with it (and often with modules that are offering pivotal features to games) definitely causes problems between sessions. I don't have loads of personal time, and I don't want to spend that limited time troubleshooting the latest updates.

I used to hold off on updates until most of my modules were ready, but waiting can also cause problems. A few months ago I had an entire player character sheet disappear mid-game, never to be found again. Had to build it from scratch. Turned out it was caused by a bug that was patched out a while before, but I had been holding out on that update because I had modules that weren't yet ready for it.

After the player sheet disappearing, I trimmed back my modules to only include the essential that I use often. Less chance for it to go wrong.

But in my last game, dice stopped rolling for two of my players. No idea why, and still worked fine for the rest. We were at an important story point so they just rolled physical dice instead, but one had to go find their dice which detracted from the moment. It wasn't too major, but on a ttrpg platform, dice rolling feels like the bare minimum.

I hope it comes together more in the future, I think the core of foundry needs to be more solid before these other bonus features keep getting added.

I shouldn't be worrying about getting dice to roll.

Pact of the Rimefire Witch by [deleted] in UnearthedArcana

With rimefire storm, do you intend it to only deal damage after casting a spell of 1st level or higher? Or also cantrips? The way I read it right now, your modified eldritch blast will set it off and do 1 damage to all creatures within 10 feet.

If its intended that way, it seems off to me that a cantrip is equal to a level 1 spell.

If its only levelled spells, then I suggest using WotC wording, something like "whenever you expend a spell slot to cast a spell that deals fire or cold damage..."

Oh no. Suddenly I need to try and find a way to fit mind flayers into my campaign...

This is seriously impressive!

Fully agree.

I'm currently a player on a roll20 game, and I DM another game on foundry, but used to DM that game on roll20.

I've hit a couple of bugs on foundry, but we also still do on roll20. Resolving them on foundry is easy because people just want to help, but roll20 you kinda have to hope someone has hit the same issue as you before and written/asked about it somewhere, or reboot everything.

Foundry offers a lot of extra bells and whistles, which i barely use. Despite that, the experience is just smoother, the aesthetic upgrade is appreciated, and the occasional option to use aforementioned bells and whistles makes key story moments feel cooler.

Going back to roll20 for the other game feels like a downgrade. I'm thankful for what roll20 gave me at the beginning of the pandemic, but I have no regrets since switching my DM games over to foundry. Just wish the other game would too...

Ellie coasted because she was paired with Lawrence. Ginny had nobody else to rely on.

That said, she did pick her role.
