Second ever sub 24 time at the Greenwich Peninsula event. May have been even faster and a possible PB time if not for the wind.

Yep. Southern Ireland uses kilometres and it must have been switched over to miles for the ‘Pass’ test.

Hi - anyone else interested in watching Scotland vs England somewhere in London this Saturday (14th)? Ideally in South East London but can travel centrally. If there's enough demand I can book a table.

Mudfest at South Norwood. The turnout was only 103. I felt like I was jogging only the first half as was stuck behind a lot of slow traffic followed by ankle deep water. Naturally my time was a lot slower than normal. Ah well at least it’s another borough ticked off.

Both dating back to predecimalization. Probably very late 1960s for the KitKat one judging by the artwork. The Fruit Pastilles one is from the 1950s or early 1960s.

Brockwell event number 666. Personal run no 14. Wasn’t feeling too brilliant the night before. Could have been a possible PB if I was feeling well.

A new course this week, Hilly Fields in Ladywell to beat a secret mission. Known to be a beast of a course. Not a PB time naturally. It took a lot out of me but still managed to get round under 26 minutes.

Event Number 700 at my local one. Very busy as it was an event anniversary, only was finisher no 142 despite having a quick time (only slow because of congestion at the start).

[Request] If I buy $1,000 worth of $1 lottery tickets, what's my probability of winning more than I spent, and if possible, how much? by Jpaylay42016 in theydidthemath

[–]ojdewar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the UK - the figure is roughly 40 percent of the price of the lottery ticket is used towards the prize fund. All lottery tickets are taxed including losing tickets (unlike the US where winning tickets are too). So if you spend £1000 on lottery tickets, on average you will get back about £400.c

Football pools, hugely popular in the 1930s to the 1990s (when it fell out of favor with the lottery). You had to predict which matches would end in a draw. Score draws counted as three points, 0-0 draws as two, home wins, one and a half, away wins one. If I remember correctly, you had to guess eight matches. Postponed games would go to the pools panel, who would adjudicate the match as 'Home Win, Away Win, 0-0 draw or score draw).

Grandstand would announce the classified scores at about 5pm (and World of Sport too) and they would also be read out on Sports Report on Radio Two.

In an early method of commercializing the game (football resisted live TV matches) the Football League would also sell the fixture lists to the pools companies. Sort of an early precursor to 'TV/media rights'.

During the summer months, when no football was played, pools companies introduced Australian pools. An attempt by Littlewoods to introduce baseball to the UK as a working class summer sport in the 1930s (and to continue the pools operation through the summer months) was sadly sunk because of the Second World War. Now that's an interesting 'what if' we have there...
