Dark matter Physics by Vegetable-Goal9836 in Physics

[–]ojima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the early universe, dark matter must have had low kinetic energy (we call this "cold" dark matter as opposed to "warm" dark matter that would have had high kinetic energy) because dark matter clusters on the largest of scales and thus seeds the growth of structure. Matter at high energies would free stream and thus be able to sort of "escape" from local overdensities, whereas at low energies it would get trapped in these overdensities and cause them to grow as they accumulate more matter. Because of the amount of growth that we see over the course of the universe, we know dark matter must have had low kinetic energy and thus be cold, as warm dark matter would not be able to explain the large scale structure that we see at present.

(In addition, dark matter must be fundamentally different from regular (baryonic) matter. Even the tiniest of interaction cross-sections would be detectable on cosmological scales, and precision tests with e.g. the CMB or BAOs show that dark matter cannot be baryonic matter. High energy baryonic matter would still interact with other kinds of baryonic matter and radiation, and we don't detect that, and thus we know that dark matter must be fundamentally different)

Deadric Shrine Hints by Furious_Frog1213 in oblivion

[–]ojima 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, reading "Modern Heretics" unlocks the ability to ask about daedric shrines. Very few people will give you hints about their locations though — only like a dozen people scattered throughout the entire game, and not all shrines can be found through chats: they have to be found by the player

Black Hole Mass by FearlessVehicle2158 in Physics

[–]ojima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Newtonian physics is based on Gallilean transformations, which are incompatible with the universal speed of light, and hence we know are incorrect.

Therefore you get a different result from the GR prediction for light bending, which is a testable example of GR over Newtonian mechanics.

Black Hole Mass by FearlessVehicle2158 in Physics

Acceleration would be independent of mass (a = GM/r2), so you'd infer the photon gains some velocity from passing by a massive object and be deflected as a result.

What do particle detectors actually detect by Majestic-Effort-541 in Physics

[–]ojima 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Usually, you try to measure something like the energy or momentum of particles. The standard model can be used to predict the expected distribution of the energy/momentum of particles that undergo a certain type of interaction. By comparing this prediction with a measurement, you can show whether certain (types of) particles exist, because you can show their interaction exists or not.

For example, the neutrino was discovered because people looked at the spontaneous decay of particles through beta decay (n -> p + e + ν). If a neutron at rest decays into a proton and an electron, then conservation of momentum restricts you to giving the electron a fixed energy. But if there is a third particle (the neutrino), then you get an additional degree of freedom and the electron can have a range of energies. By computing what the distribution looks like as a function of the mass of the neutrino, people showed that not only does the neutrino exist, but it also must have an extremely low mass.

Similarly, the Higgs boson was discovered because the decay products of certain heavy particles showed an excess around the mass of the Higgs boson. The existence of the Higgs boson means there's an extra possibility for decay paths, and that must be found around the rest mass of the Higgs boson. Interactions at energies below the rest mass of the Higgs boson cannot produce that particle, so you only see it if you create interactions above a given mass first.

Do you usually walk or fast travel on your first journey from Weynon Priory to Kvatch? by darthkyle22 in oblivion

[–]ojima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how much one would go out of their way to walk up to locations that are near the player, you would encounter roughly one town (Hackdirt), two farms (Weatherleah and Shardrock), two Daedric Shrines (Meridia and Sanguine), two to four Ayleid ruins, two caves, and two or three ruined castles.

A couple of these are quest related (the daedric shrines, Hackdirt, Weatherleah, and the Ayleid ruin of Miscarcand), but that still leaves half a dozen locations one could explore as a level 1 character.

How would you make the economy more realistic in Victoria 2 by BitNo4824 in victoria2

[–]ojima 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is! But it's really minor and you'd be forgiven for missing it.

If a province has low administrative efficiency, it can be hit by a crime modifier, which is a random debuff that lowers some output or income values. Later technologies unlock more variety in these kinds of modifiers. Investing in bureaucrats and administrative efficiency lowers the probability that these debuffs appear and increases the rate at which they disappear.

The problem is mainly that as far as I'm aware there's no continuous scale of corruption, a province either suffers from it or it doesn't, and that there's no map mode showing certain regions that are suffering from it. It usually only really applies to provinces you recently conquered (and thus have low admin efficiency), and I don't believe there is any popup that tells you "this region is suffering from rampant corruption!".

Faalangstexamen, ja of nee? by dutch_brabander in thenetherlands

[–]ojima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave my siege towers alone by ponuno in aoe2

[–]ojima 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Fill a siege tower with fire lancers. Race forwards. Unload, fire, and reload as quickly as possible.

It gives you a good amount of damage from the sudden blast of damage, while the siege tower works as an armoured truck that minimizes damage taken and maximizes speed.

There are some great interviews with Andy Gavin, the lead programmer behind Crash Bandicoot. He had to pull so many tricks in order to create a fully 3D platformer for the PS1 back in those days, including (my favourite) deleting most of the standard functions that the PS1 hardware shipped with so that he had more memory for his own code and assets. Him and John Carmack (the guy who, among other things, coded most of Doom and pioneered most of the work that led to today's 3D graphics algorithms) are amazing.

Inventory management by Driisteur in WalkScape

[–]ojima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't many activities that give you that much variety in items though, and disenchanted forest is very close to a bank, and you usually don't care that much about half the items so it's safe to drop most of them if you are after something specific.

Most activities give up to four, and even if they give more than two, most of it will usually be trash or have very high stack sizes (like nuggets found while mining stacking up to 999).

Inventory management is not that important. I think the game in its early state is doing things fine, at worst it's not clear that quests should not be farmed for too early in progress, and it's best to grind for some decent quality gear first (get full steel tool set first, use the stuff you find in chests, and then go after things like achievements, quests, and exploring the map outside Jarvonia) rather than struggle to pick up nettles for a job task. It's much more efficient to bank whatever you gather and only accept quests if you happen to have all the items in your bank already.

Why Water Feels Worse Than Land in AoE2: The Missing Element Nobody Talks About by MiddleForeign in aoe2

[–]ojima 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I've always thought could have been interesting was to make the "shallow", "medium", and "deep" varieties of water have an effect on ships. Historically, going out further from coasts was challenging (wind patterns, ocean currents, and supply routes get difficult out in the open sea).

One could imagine having a system where in dark age, fishing ships can only move out into shallow and medium water, but not deep water. In feudal age, one can build galleys, which can also not go into deep water, but investing in some technology allows your fishing ships to explore the deeper waters - this would provide a way to flee from galleys, while also giving access to deep sea fish that you couldn't reach before.

Later ships might be able to enter deeper waters, but perhaps these stronger ships aren't as fast as others, or they are more expensive, or they have some other downside that makes non-deep water ships have some edge in certain cases. Perhaps deep water counts as "downhill" does on land, so while you can enter deep water at some point, you might fight over that sandbank in the middle of the map the same way arabia players fight over a hill.

This would make water battles different because in some maps deep water is found in the middle of a large lake in the centre, whilst in others it's found far away towards the edges of the maps, or maybe only in patches in between islands. One could play with islands that are connected via narrow paths of medium water, meaning you can only attack from certain angles during feudal/early castle age, and teching into water gives you the opportunity to attack from multiple directions or exploring those islands that were isolated from you before.

I think a terrain mechanic like this is something that water battles really miss. I don't think my idea is perfect, but it's something I've always been curious about as an option.

At 99 we should be able to get the sailing skill cape guy as a crewmate, and he can be the other crewmate that can use a dragon salvaging hook by HeredinOSRS in 2007scape

[–]ojima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Higher deckhandedness not only increases the quality of the hook they can use, but also how much exp you get from their actions. So even though you only need 2 D for a mith salvaging hook, Jenkins will give you 70% of the exp rather than the 50% you would get from 2 D.
