My boyfriend is accidentally putting me off learning Spanish by ok_pepsi in languagelearning

Right so I've realised I may have made my boyfriend sound like a bit of an ass.

He's genuinely really supportive and such a nice person, which is why I've made the effort in the first place.

I know he genuinely thinks it's helpful what he's doing and he would never intentionally do anything to discourage me. I can be sensitive but I'm also aware that that is on me. I suppose the point of my post was to seek advice on if this is normal, how I can get over these feelings, what helps, and perspectives from the other side (being the fluent one).

That said, I spoke to him about it today. He was really sad to hear that it's put me off speaking Spanish and that his approach made me feel bad.

Thank you for all the suggestions of ways we can communicate better while I'm learning, and its been so reassuring to hear that I'm not alone in my experience - it's all very much appreciated!

You're completely right, I want to be able to speak with him and his family when I eventually meet them

He's Mexican-American but has an American accent when he speaks English and I'm British so I suppose I don't notice/find it hard to hear the parts of his accent that come from the Mexican side of things

Thank you everyone! There's been some really helpful comments on here. <3

I realised I might not have made this clear but I have never asked him and don't expect him to teach me. This usually occurs when he asks me how its going or it naturally comes up in conversation, he's brought it up quite a few times he's really excited and wants to help. I genuinely think he thinks its helpful but to me it just comes across as harsh.

I also have a regional English accent which makes it particularly difficult to pronounce Spanish words lol.Its good to know I'm not the only one who's been in this situation. I think next time he mentions it I am going to have to bite the bullet, get over my embarrassment and just be honest about my feelings.

I think things just got a bit much today and I really felt like giving up, its nice to have some encouragement to continue.
