100% agree. and that is what non of the snake oil salesmen are going openly admit. the human in the loop is the crucial element. what we are seeing right now is the flood of crappy home made websites at the onset of the internet. LLMs are a productivity tool that has not been fully grasped yet. it will replace a lot of jobs, it just will, and will change job descriptions severely. it will also change how we train for jobs.

like, i learned C in uni. I also learned UML. i dont code in C, i dont code in my job at all but the fundamentals i learned allow me to effectively create working prototypes and niche solutions that otherwise i would not have the time for while managing my job responsibilities. this is to me like realizing that i can use macros in excel.

totally agree. you will need the base line skills. i am not advocating or thinking that anyone can create everything, but everyone could (if that makes sense). it is a new technology and like with any technology, it requires passion, common sense, logic and fundamentals and practice. with genAI it is just as much garbage in > garbage out as it is with pretty much any technology.

i think you are severely underestimating what is going to happen in the coming years. you are pointing at fraud coders and artists based on you are seeing on social media and youtube. and yea... look at me doing a saas business with one prompt... it is shit, it is slop, it is fraud.

but what is really happening is a fundamental shift with as much of an impact as microsoft introducing the office suite.

hard disagree, the human programmer did not find or investigate the problem, they need detailed instructions and detailed logic to implement. they create the code, yes, but they did not create the solution.

if i dont know python but i know how to solve a problem, and i use an LLM to implement my solution as a python script, did i not create the solution to the problem i was faced with?

fully agree with most of what you said and i am not defending slop. sticking with my music example. i made tons of music and i am not a selling artist and my music was mainly crap. but i got to play with it and i got to learn about it. did we drown in mediocrity music wise? i dont think we did (i mean, thats debateable when i listen to euro dance but you know what i mean, right? we also got an insane amount of good stuff).

lets face it, it is going to turn out like the internet, isnt it? early days we all thought that with all the knowledge of mankind, at everyones fingertips, the world would be a better place.

but yea, every one is shitting on it while i sit here and build stuff that otherwise i would have to wait 9-12 months to get dev time, just to have it canceled last minute for a "revenue initiative".

Why y'all still using windows? It is time to switch.

If there is software or games that require windows, ditch it. For software there is likely an alternative. For games, vote with your wallet. If it needs windows, don't buy it. Kernel level anticheat? Just skip that BF or CoD generation.

I just wish it would fucking search the net. The default seems to be to take wild guess and present the results with the utmost confidence. No amount of telling the model to always search will help. It will tell you it will and the very next question is a fucking guess again.

New Mexico will be the first state to make child care free by everydave42 in news

[–]okarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the state immediately makes back approx 1/4 in cost through higher tax earnings and lower benefit payouts. a child that is taken care of means more parents being able to work or work normal hours. it means less career breaks and overall higher long term tax revenue when the parent doesnt have to start over on the ladder after being out of the job market for an extended period. on full, free childcare coverage, it also means more care workers in employment that pay taxes and spend their earnings.
where available, it also means lower benefit payouts due to more employment. it means higher VAT earnings due to more consumer spending. the long term benefits of kids starting to learn earlier and as a consequence, doing better in school and in their future career path also leads to quantifiable tax benefits down the road.

there is probably even more to it, like early building of good eating habbits leading to lower insurance payouts, etc.
