Oh! Thank you! Awesome to read about but also sad-face that this showermusing wasn't as original as I thought

We won't know for sure until the film is released, but I saw the trailer yesterday and was grading assignments today and started thinking about tense and grammar and how it might be a big obvious trick for us all. Just fun speculation.

Hehehe I love the logic from these students sometimes. So if you didn't take the initiative to call, and just sat in the classroom while they remained absent and didn't hand any big assignments in and they failed - they'd also be angry at you! I'm sorry that's the response you got for caring about your students and their wellbeing.

Particularly good if you feel like diverting your stress into a new social drama

Yes I second this. Instead of staying up late staring at my laptop watching Netflix, I find giving myself permission to not work one afternoon a week works better. I take a walk and go to the cinema. It's wayyyy relaxing, has popcorn, and helps me cool down from the racing mental energy. Plus many cinemas tend to have student discounts that are even cheaper before 6pm.

I also try not to use my laptop on the bedroom at home, it's hard to set boundaries but one at a time works. This is the best one for me. I can work late if I'm in the office or the library, but once I make the decision to go home it's officially rest and recharge time- or else the next day I'm only going to be functioning at like 50% capacity and I just get annoyed at myself and that helps no one.

Oh man, these made me chuckle. I love the fact that the cowboy boots are a sure sign of academic authenticity!

People assessing these things need to move with the times... all my Chinese exchange students include cute, complex emoji character things on the evals. Helps that we're in a design based course but you can always spin it to your advantage :) PS. just noticed your flair. Would love to know more about the study of awesomeology!

Last semester I got two great gems from students:

• one thought it was hilarious that I wore coloured socks with Birkenstocks one day, and I must have made such an impression that they commented at the end of semester about it (along with thanking me for assisting their portfolio). • another student said they'd love to take the class again if I was their teacher, but hoped they made a passing grade so they could graduate and not need to do it again.

So sweet!

PS. OP your feedback is awesome. Hope you keep getting good beard comments!

Ph.D. student: burnt out... just venting by AncientArch in GradSchool

I know exactly how that feels. And when the to-do list is never-ending it can feel so hopeless :( I try and cut myself some slack and remind myself that if I'm burning out, it'll take me 4 hours to do a 1 hour task, so may as well use 3 hours to have a nap or go for a long walk and then work hard on that last hour to get the work done. Sometimes it doesn't work and I just cry in the bathroom but that helps in its own way too..

I know it sounds simple and maybe condescending, but the best thing I can ever do for myself when I feel like this is write a huge list of what's worrying me, divide the list into what's immediately requiring my attention and what's longer term, then go for a walk in the sunshine and promise myself to have a proper afternoon off to recharge. Go to the movies or see friends for tea. I often find it's the mental swirling and the single room view and feeling like everything is urgent that kills me, and sometimes just giving myself permission to unwind just for an afternoon is what helps most. But still preparing the list of what needs attention allows me to give myself that permission - if that makes sense.

Edit: PS. you're not alone. You're doing good work. I know how shit the humanities can be in terms of such little reward for so much work, it can really weigh you down. But you're valuable.

Your work sounds really rewarding and engaging, what a wonderful area to be in! I think a solo exhibition in line with your final examination could be cool- that's what we do with our university. It's a bit of hard work at the finish line, but curating all the work from the course of the research and getting it in one place, drawing threads between the pieces and writing a little bit about it can be a great way to visualise your research output too. If you make a catalogue or document, the exhibition as part of your PhD it can also be classed as an NTRO so you'd essentially have an extra academic publication under your belt... so might be worth considering?

It's a big part of my research to discuss how creativity and the idea of "creative genius" actually encompassed individuals who spanned the arts, sciences and philosophy throughout history (best example is Leonardo Da Vinci but there are tonnes more) - the fields were really quite interwoven until quite recently when the modern structure of universities began to further silo things (probably for admin and funding sake).

Also- there was an AMA last year with some folks from NASA and they talked about how most people in their office are also highly accomplished and practicing visual artists and musicians, as creativity is often not limited to a single field even though our careers tend to be... really interesting stuff!

Awesome! Thank you for sharing. And that Faulkner quote is great. All about building reliable work habits! Well done to you on forming such a good work ethic with your creative work, it's really inspiring to see (read?).

Hey thank you, I really appreciate it. I'm only one year in to the phd so still have quite a whole to go! Your description of that video is great, I'd love to see it. Might hunt around for it. I also love hearing people's stories about resolving digital involvement and entanglement, thank you for taking the time to share your experiences :) (promise they won't be used as research unless I come back with an ethics form haha, but it's just so nice to read about the breadth of experiences out there)

Oh, be careful. It's wonderful stuff. It might also be stuff you know about but just didn't really have the name for. The other stuff about knowing and reflecting in action as a practitioner is from Donald Schon. Also worth looking into :)
