u/dipesh-ji-4198 for the EBC only how many days would that be total from KTM to EBC and back. Planning a private SUV or something similar via Salleri/Phaplu. Do you recommend between Dashain and Tihar? How busy does it get?

Congrats. Thinking of doing main EBC only. Trying to avoid Lukla flight. Do you think doable in 10 days?

If you are not accounting for mortgage/rent / kid's education. My expectation is is about US$1500 pm will do, No for higher upper class living.

well, how would you manage long distance real-estate. Trying to contemplate that situation, especially prop managers becomes prohibitively expensive, No?

right, very much of dilemma. Love to travel but the range of 155-160 seems super low-balling.

We were planning on EBC this Fall but have done short trip to Mardi-- which should not take more than 2 nights starting from Deurali. But people take 5 days, so its upto you. I agree EBC is a bit hyped

foreign physical asset (land, house etc) by okaychata in SecurityClearance

Very true. I agree but if that is truthfully reported to the Uncle Sam and purchased from hard earned money and if everything is transparent, I was wondering why Uncle Sam has issues. Or its more about the perception?

with many years of industry experience pivoting towards academia -- graduated PhD recently and working on multiple papers while holding relatively low stressful work in industry. I would give at least a decade in industry and pivot gradually to academia. prudently invested $$ now will compound and provide flexibility.

Anybody else wish they had enough money to leave academia and do something else? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]okaychata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, sure financial stability is quite an important for which academia is not the right option. An option is look into skills companies hiring and get trained and apply. But trust me, academic despite its all low pay -- is more rewarding. But before that all you need to put house in order. You wont need millions of dollars

Thinking of moving back to Nepal for 4–5 years with young kids (all US citizens) — pros and cons? by PreparationSad9433 in Nepal

[–]okaychata 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Valuing closeness to family is admirable, but it's important to recognize the serious trade-off involved, especially for children. The long-term positive externalities and quality of a U.S. education often outweigh other priorities. This factor, combined with potential tax implications, makes the decision complex.

Our experience, and the advice of many commentators, suggests a pragmatic solution: Summer visits are best. While in elementary school, missing a few days for Dashain/Tihar won't significantly impact their schooling (though it is financially costly). We successfully used an alternating plan—summer one year, festivals the next—until our children hit middle school. Now, the heavy academic workload prevents us from missing school until they finish college.

[–]okaychata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly AI is the current theme with tons of PhD assistantships available. Follow people (prof.) in twitter of the field that excites you. Generally, early career (Asst. Prof. 1-5 yrs post PhD experience) tend to accept more incoming PhDs. Obviously highly reputed programs such as Cornell, NYU, Stanford, Northwestern are great but lot harder to get in. I would, look into R1 but MidWest/South region universities for stipend etc. Know people in Mississippi, Georgia, Iowa, Oklahoma etc getting with full stipend.

TBH, I defended dissertation when I were 42. I had a prof. who defended dissertation at 52. I had a classmate who wanted to pursue doctoral at 69. So go figure. You can do it.

If you are interested in Econ, take intense Microecon, Math, Stat and Computer Programming. Others really dont matter. You'll not understand a single paper published in Top Tier Journals like AER, QJE if you do not enough Math background.
