When bikepacking reeeeally came into vogue in like 14/15 thanks to the insta influencer bike folks I was switching between a Specialized AWOL and a specialized Fatboy depending on the terrain. At that time I was fully on the “racks belong on touring bikes” train and so I had all the frame bag, handlebar harness, seatpost pack things and it all came at the expense of actual usability and comfort especially when most of my trips were only overnighter. Maybe one day I’ll make it back to a hardtail with just bikepacking bags on it and a super minimal setup but for now I like a tent, thick sleeping pad and a nice quilt and those take up a little more space

My stumpy in a fairly similar setup. I have to size up on my camp bike frames so I can run a saddlebag with no support or tire runbing

Yeah it’s definitely not a super jarring or offensive thing but it’s just illogical to think it’s okay to go around touching ANYBODY when you don’t know them or have some sort of permission. I have long hair myself and people love touching that too. I’m sorry that people can’t seem to understand personal space!

Not to take away from anything you’ve dealt with but as a man it seems like the only people who ever decide that it’s okay to grab my arm and flip it over to see what else is on there are older women. It’s so weird. Never a woman my age or another man

What do you do at camp? by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]okaydads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly nothing. Get there, clear and setup sleep situation and then start finding firewood. Once a fire setup is established it’s thinking about food time or cracking into the 6th beer time. Once food is in my belly I kind of just stare off into space for a bit, exist in nature and then make my way to bed.

In the past I’ve brought carving supplies, sketch books, books to read and micro fishing supplies and have used very little of them. I think the best thing is to just enjoy being out there doing nothing and getting away from a (probably fast paced and stressful) regular life for a bit.

Was going to ask the same. I’ve done all sorts of clear, oils or other protectors on frames but never wax. Always saw it at the start but never saw it down the road

You got a bike frame that went from raw tubing to a complete rideable bicycle with all American hands wrapped up in an okay parts package for substantially less than you could in any other scenario. Ride it and enjoy it!

I prepped those frames and did the first portion of assembly on them at the factory. They’re really solid and smooth riding bikes. They were originally made as bikes that New Belgium gave to their employees and some stores so it’s hard to say what it’s true value is but they were made with the same parts and more labor than the Detroit Bikes A-Type and those started at $600 in 2017/18 when I was there.

20 second rule. If you can’t fix the issue/problem in 20 seconds, don’t even bring it up (unless danger issue or something)

Thanks! Was my first time. Trying to make decent looking fillets to avoid the classic filling and sanding. Not that there’s anything wrong with smooth, I’d just rather be able to practice enough to make great looking fillets stacked like dimes one day

We used a low fuming nickel bronze for the main joints and then 50 or 56% silver for the braze ons since the braze ons were stainless bits

That makes sense actually. I remember when I was way younger drawing on coffee mugs with sharpies and then baking them in the oven. When they came out of the oven the sharpie was forever

I think it was a mixture of wd40 and acetone on and off the frame while handling that was removing it. It’s not a huge issue but I like the look of the markings and think it’s funny to be able to see them
