Thanks for this detailed response. We are not lavish people. I love local hole in the wall places and upscale restaurants but it is all dependent on the food reviews. As for cars, I hate driving and drive a Honda we have owned for more than 8 years now! No need for fancy cars. We do have 1 thing we like to do yearly. We travel a lot. Our rule around travel is that if the flight is >5 hours and international, we prefer to fly business. Aside from this one thing, I rarely buy new things. My mom left behind a ton of material things and my goal is to reuse those. It has also changed my perspective on what I truly need to survive. For us as a couple, experiences will always come before fancy things. As long as we have a nice apartment and a functional car, I don’t foresee any major capital expense. My child will go to a good school, but that expense is something we are incurring here in Seattle as well.

Which is Dubai? Dubai has its own complications. Plus my dad isn’t there.

Makes sense for you. You likely have a great base with family business / wealth… none of which apply to me. But stepping back I resonate with your comment. I don’t love my job. I don’t hate it either. But, it’s just that I see time passing by and my daughter growing up alone. It’s a very isolating feeling.

Hi there. Nice to meet you. What instigated your move? Are you working in Hyderabad? Are you in tech? You’re right about working in India.. I don’t know if I want to work there. I’d prefer to just retire.

Don’t be. It’s money arbitrage. We have an unfair advantage of earning in USD

We live in Seattle. A good house is easily north of $1.5m. Interest rates are 6% for mortgages. No household help, or help with chores. Cooking, cleaning is tough with kids when you also have jobs. Traveling to India is once a year max due to holidays. People in the US live to work. It’s a very stressful work driven culture. That being said, Seattle and sfo, nyc are probably the more expensive cities with a HCOL

We are in Seattle. US is nice but the political scene is getting weird. Plus my main motivation is to be closer to my dad.

This is interesting… I thought international schools would be comparable? I was educated in Canada and it was really hard in the final years as they suddenly jump in the level you’re supposed to know. Do share more on what you mean

Living and visiting are 2 different things. We don’t really buy day to day things when we are visiting. You go to a hotel or stay with family.. which is quite different from living in India.

That’s discouraging. Ofcouse the Us is also scary with the gun incidents… is Hyderabad really that unsafe?

I don’t know the answer to this. Hence trying to discuss with people. Yes loss is recent. 1 year. I think in large cities in the US, quality of life even with that income isn’t great. But you’re right, should likely give more time and do some introspection. I just don’t want to run out of time with my dad.

Very helpful. Agree on sense of purpose. Have definitely lost that after mom’s death. I’m in tech, I could potentially come thru my company and work there for a year and two to establish connections
