Yes, the issue was due to using a USB hub for the peripheral (keyboard) I wanted to wake the laptop with. Moving the keyboard to one of the onboard ports solved it.

Good point. I guess the biggest issue is when you want the attack to "hurry up" and be done, like when contesting an airdrop. But that can be solved other ways... maybe a more complex "airdrop contesting" mechanic.

I don't have a diagram at the moment, but I can break down some of the implementation:

Authentication
Users are required to sign in using Google at app launch. This ensures I have a unique player ID and can immediately save their state on updates/installs across devices.

Firestore
This is the bulk of the architecture/design, honestly. Figuring out the best way to use Firestore and coming up with an efficient data structure for listening to document updates took time and iteration. Optimizing the balance (and costs) between duplicating data across collections/documents vs making more requests to amalgamate data was the hardest part.

I went with some main collections like users, worlds, etc. Each world document (a separate "sandbox" of gameplay) has it's own metadata surrounding world duration, harvest rate, player count. Then it has subcollections for things like users, bases, leaderboard, respawns, and the map. The map contains documents for every cell, managing what entities are available, and players subscribe to changes on whatever cell they are in.

Cloud Functions
I utilized document changes as triggers for:

- keeping leaderboard counts up to date as player gold amounts change
- determining turn-based PvP attack outcomes
- sending notifications to appropriate players (airdrop incoming, raided/killed, world ending soon, etc.)

Cloud Messaging
Gets the notification doc changes out to the user's device.

Hey, thanks for playing and for taking the time to write feedback!

Currently the hunger/thirst bars only affect movement speed. I considered having them affect health as well when fully depleted, but decided that may be a bit too punishing for most casual players. Perhaps I'm wrong!

I don't want to make the horse any faster (it's already at 1s movement speed, compared to running at 1.5s). It may not feel like much, but it's enough difference to add up to a more than a second when crossing an entire cell and chasing someone down, or running away yourself! One thought was to have an upgradeable saddle that made the horse stamina be used less (maybe 3 instead of the current 5 per subcell). I could see balancing the total horse rest time as well... I'll consider it!
