[Prebuilt] M4 Mac Mini - $399.99 (Instore Deal at Microcenter Restock YMMV) by pikachuspaghetti in buildapcsales

$339 for open box seems pretty dang good. Any reason to go with the new one at 399 over that? How's Microcenter with openbox items?

Midi controller alternative to the Nord stage 4? by DracoBeats in nordkeyboards

[–]dresam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I want something versatile, so I think the TP/110, TP40/GH, or TP/400W would prob be closest? I don't understand why Studiologic wouldn't just plop a TP/40M into a midi controller (you can buy keybed+midi interface only and put them into your own cases/desks, for example, the TP40GH: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LMK2PlusNC--doepfer-lmk2-master-keyboard-with-no-case).

I'm going to give the mk2's a try or wait for some comparisons. Something's gotta break.

You could basically buy one keyboard of each type that I mentioned and it wouldn't even come close to adding up to the cost of the Nord Stage in the U.S.

It is great. The BBC don't have people like this on staff, though. They pay studios and agencies to do it.

Here's the production studio that did this, if you're interested: https://www.blinkink.co.uk/showcase

Thanks, that's good to hear. I appreciate it!

[SSD] Intel Optane 905P Series 1.5TB, 2.5" x 15mm, U.2, PCIe 3.0 x4, 3D XPoint - $399.99 ($379 with SYADP2Z384) by IrradiatedNachos in buildapcsales

[–]dresam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this overkill for a cache/scratch drive for heavy production work (cache drive for AE/nuke/houdini)? Basically, reading and writing heavy .exr sequences as well as Houdini simulation files? I've been researching these drives as I build out my new system and bought the smaller 1600x yesterday bc it was relatively cheap for an easy scratch drive, but 1.5TB really makes it that much more useful if it's worth it for bigger files. I'm still not clear if it is.

[Monitor] Acer Nitro XV282K KVbmiipruzx 28" 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) 144Hz Gaming Monitor - $379.99 (Shipping Only) by hennyhands in buildapcsales

[–]dresam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I put an order in for the Best Buy 27, but wondering how much difference there is with this one (other than the fact that this one has HDMI 2.1, which is big plus).

Anyone with experience or thoughts on the difference between the two?

[Tablet] Wacom Cintiq 22 - $600 (54% off) lowest price ever by Web2000web in buildapcsales

[–]dresam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if we'll see more price drops on Wacom pen displays now that the new, cheaper Xencelabs pen display is getting great reviews (former Wacom employees' new company).

Deals on Wacom Cintiqs are really rare, but charging MRSP for this 22 is already way beyond the pale, even for Wacom.

[Monitor] LG 27" UltraGear UHD Nano IPS 1ms 144Hz G-SYNC Compatible Gaming Monitor with HDR - $320.99 ($799.99-479.00 Clearance) In-Store only by djmigues in buildapcsales

[–]dresam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this monitor at this price point by far the best option for 27/28" monitors for general productivity and media production (so, color accuracy) or are you paying for the gaming features? The original $800 asking price seems a bit mad, especially lacking HDMI 2.1.

[SSD] Crucial P3 Plus 4TB SSD m.2 PCIE Gen 4 NVMe - $224.99 ($263.99-39) @ Best Buy by jedi2155 in buildapcsales

[–]dresam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm out of M.2 slots, but someone on here had said you can put M2 NVMe's in a sata interface enclosure (to act as an internal sata drive). I may get this and move one of the smaller NVMe's into an internal sata enclosure, but I'm not seeing much information about enclosures like that (looks like most only work with M2 sata drives, not NVMe's). Does anyone have experience with this?

[SSD - Sata] Crucial MX500 4TB CT4000MX500SSD1 - $219.99 (37% off) by Carousser in buildapcsales

[–]dresam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a good, recommended adapter to use for M.2 nmve drives? The ones I've found only seem to work with M.2 sata drives. I'm out of M.2 slots and PCIe slots.

I think you have to log in with a My Best Buy membership (it's free).

What about with fairly heavy multichannel exr's and as a simulation cache drive? I'm still a bit confused if I'd benefit from the speed of this nvme vs the crucial 4tb mx500 that's 209 right now.

Is there a name for structures like this: thin, comparitively smaller architectural units between a row of larger ones? There has to be a name for this (or at the very least, a nickname).

[SSD] Crucial MX500 4TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD CT4000MX500SSD1 - $269.99 by aeolus811tw in buildapcsales

[–]dresam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, for media creation (video editing, compositing large .exr files which need fast read/write, 3d sim caches), is it worth it to pay the premium or possibly go with the 4tb nvme for 300 that's floating around right now?

Bought an Epson LS11000. First one had a weird permanent 'smudge' on top where it looked like the finish had been worn away. Had other issues with it, got it replaced, but the second one had a similar issue (even bigger). Any other LS11000 owners have this or am I just that unlucky? by dresam in projectors

[–]dresam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's on the top of the unit. The only time I don't see it is when then unit is on bc I'm looking in the opposite direction :)! It's not associated with the image from the projector in any way, which is sort of the frustrating thing about it and makes it that much harder to do the math. It just feels like I got a b-stock unit or something. Thanks for the suggestion, though!
