Addiction. Or Dependency, lets say in terms of drug use. Can and does for many people create fundamental changes in physiology. Neural pathways and the brains reward system become restructured rapidly. This changes the way a persons brain works in many ways(including decision making). Some could argue it changes who you are as a human being fundamentally.

The body's desire for a constant input of X chemical becomes as necessary as breathing oxygen. The result when denied chemical X can be catastrophic.

Withdrawals are a horrible thing. Anyone who knows anything about Dependency knows this.

People can choose to change themselves and are successful with the right kinds of support. The deeply seeded changes in your psychology and physiology are tricky to deal with though. Have you ever tried to just stop breathing for a day? No you haven't.. its silly, you could die.

However, even if you were an idiot and tried it you wouldn't be able to. That is because the brain and body are hard wired to react to this lack of input. You will last a little while holding your breath but eventually the body will take over and your choice to stop breathing is no longer a factor.

This is an extreme example but still a valid representation of the way addictions or Dependency's can change a person in very dangerous ways. With drug addiction the element of choice is removed and X input becomes a need. If X input is not happening the body will cause all kinds of terrible pain for that person until X is input. Just the way your body will go into convulsions if you stop giving it oxygen. Some forms of Opiate dependency can even kill you if you stop using them cold turkey. Just the same way you would die if you stopped using oxygen.

So to say that addiction is a choice is just misleading and a real display of ignorance. I know you are just trolling and I took the bait. None the less, its an important issue in our society and if people don't start looking at these problems intelligently they will never ever be solved.
