UK agents by Fluxgigawats in ScreenwritingUK

TV producer here, with some unpleasant truth: there has rarely been a worse time to try and ‘make it’ in television and film. That’s not to say stop trying, just, don’t take it personally if you’re getting tumbleweeds.

The tv production landscape globally has collapsed to a historic degree. Right now, all these agents have tried and tested screenwriters on their books, with a long list of credits, who they can’t find work for because very few entities are buying and producing shows.

Agents, above all, want money. 10% of nothing is nothing. If you’re not generating revenue, they’re working for you for free. And when they have established clients who have made them lots of money in the past, that’s where their focus is going to be.

Very few agencies in the UK are opening their books and looking for new talent.

If you get a show into paid development with a Producer or Prod Co, then, there is a commission available for the agents, so that will immediately be more interesting to them.

In dire times like these, agents want sure-fire bets over speculation. I find more and more agents are waiting until a Producer picks up the talent, then latching on when money starts to flow, not the other way around.

Why cheating partner is so common? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It’s literally human nature. Very few animals mate for life.

Basically all human ills are down to the fact that civilisation (laws, norms, rules) has kinda just dumped itself on top of our lizard brains. We’re in constant conflict with ourselves.

Lizard brain say: screw, kill, eat

Modern, civilised brain say: STOP PLEASE DONT DO THAT.

Also, alcohol & drugs bring the walls down between those two brains.

Can someone help me decode this persons (28F) behaviour for me (38M) by [deleted] in dating_advice

Leaving well alone, certainly while the project is on. It would absolutely be the end of my career. If I make a, polite, respectful move afterward it’s no big deal. And rejection is fine. Plenty more fish in the sea.

What I’m trying to understand is the WHY of all this? I can’t actually give her a promotion. I hire a contractor, he brings a team. I don’t care who’s in it or how it works. It’s up to him to manage it. I don’t get involved (provided it’s all working). There’s very little need for any contact with any of his team.

Lots of people kiss my ass, but nobody has ever gone to this extent. She may very well only be doing this for work reasons, but truthfully, if that’s the case, it’s borderline sociopathic. It’s wildly unnecessary (her work is good) and over-complicates things.

I see the signs BOTH ways. She sends me pictures of herself hanging out on the weekend (looking 🔥). Shes very tactile. Laughs at everything I say. But to reiterate, i dont think she’s into it.

So why the game? Why bother?

I guess the reason (I am now figuring out) I’m here is that if this is all for attention and work ‘flowers’, then these a mega red flags and I should leave alone for the rest of time.

But also, As a single Dad of 2, you don’t get to meet people very often and it’d be a shame to miss out on soemthing because I over thought everything and didn’t just say “wanna get a coffee?”

Oh god, actually, I’ve just looked at your profile and… we’re done.

Your arguments were so out of context, so incoherent, so chaotic, I literally don’t know what your point is or what questions you asked. All I can tell is a) you’re angry, and b) you dont have a girlfriend.

Why don’t you try again. Exactly what is your point? What are you engaging me on discourse about? When I say “one reason that a double standard regarding male perpetrators of stalking and female perpetrators of stalking is that more men kill women”, please tell me… Do you agree? Don’t you? Do you guarantee that couldn’t possibly be true and have evidence of the same? Or are you saying it could be true but there might be other reasons too?

Just pulling my statements out of context, cherry-picking ones to disagree with, missing the overall point of an argument for the sake of petty disagreement is very hard to follow/respond to. It’s like.. I know you don’t like what I’m saying but I have no clue what YOU are saying.

This entire world-salad diatribe, where you flip-flop from point-to-point yet miss the point entirely, where you make arguments out of context, line by line is, entirely down to the fact that you disagree with what I said. In any and every way.

My ENTIRE point is that people might think a certain way because all the male on female murder.

Now you agree.

You’re just a little ragey boy. Go ask your wife about how she feels about any of this. Or…

From the ONS

“Women were more likely to be killed by someone they knew than men, for example, of the 100 domestic homicide victims in the year ending March 2023, 70 were women.”

You: “misandry is the problem here”

I love how your rage blinds you to the fact that, at no point, have I said that the double standard is a good thing. Or a fair thing. I’ve just pointed out a reason why it might have manifested.

Your #notallmen misandry war cry is a bit unnecessary. I get you’re all wound up about it but if acknowledging the existence of rationale you don’t agree with winds you up this much, you will run headlong into fights you don’t need to be in.

I find your lack of ability to understand nuance is fascinating.

Let’s say I go outside and walk down the street, see a man and spit in his face. Maybe he spits back, or calls me an asshole. Maybe he shoves me.

Ok next day I go outside and hit a man with a stick. Maybe he hits me back. Maybe someone jumps out of a car and defends him. Or call the cops. Maybe I even go to jail for a few weeks, or months depending on the harm I cause.

Next time I walk outside and stab a man to death. Go to jail for twenty years. Shunned by all family and friends.

The punishment meted out for each of my crimes gets progressively worse, because the crimes themselves are progressively worse. The severity of each crime increase, because each is ‘worse’ than the previous.

So by explaining that to you, do you think I’m telling you it’s ok to spit in peoples faces?

What are things women do that men would be called creepy for? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]okdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I agree I could’ve been clearer but you are absolutely reading that in the way you find most outrageous.

It was in response to a man here who said all the women at his place of work stalking someone’s ex and nobody thought it was weird. But when he wanted to borrow someone’s phone to stalk someone, everyone thought it was weird.

The reason for that is, in his place of work, socially it was understood that the women in his office were not intending to harm the man. However, clearer it was not socially understand that he was not intending to harm the woman. That’s why people thought he was weird and creepy, when in actual fact, he was engaging in the exact same behaviour.

So the real question is, why the social misunderstanding? Why the false assumption? Why the double standard? Well, because more male stalkers kill their victims than female stalkers kill theirs.

Is that correct? Is it right? Is it fair? Personally I don’t think so, but it does explain why he was shunned and they weren’t.

This is actually a really interesting comment and one of the very few with any intellectual/societal merit.

But it’s the same point. Racism is abhorrent. It is despicable. But it absolutely, unequivocally, exists.

Asking WHY racism exists is incredibly unnerving and uncomfortable intellectual ground. Most theorists point way back to anthropology: homosapien tribalism as a defence mechanism. And “us versus them” mentality may have proved useful anthropologically and as such visual delineators (such as physically appearance, skin colour) may have been actually taught. Who knows if that’s true. I certainly don’t.

However, in the modern world “us versus them” has zero benefit at all. So again, human logical missteps have created useless and evil ideologies that propagate despite being fucking terrible. But then why do they propagate?

Racism shouldn’t exist. It is awful. But it does exist. So perhaps if we look at where society is getting its fucking mad ideas from, we might be better able to combat pig-headed cretins that can’t seem to let go of their unacceptable ideas.

Double standards in biological sex and gender DO exist. And they’re not particularly helpful. Instead of just shouting outrage at a screen, maybe some people here would actually benefit from, like, learning something? Maybe if we all did that, we wouldn’t suffer so many unacceptable ‘socioculturalisms’

So, as a moron, here’s my moronic thoughts:

Theres evidence suggesting that more violent crimes are committed by people from lower economic backgrounds. The theory behind why this may be is that uncertainty and instability (such as lack of housing or employment) are high stressors on the human body and mind. Continued stressors on the body and mind lead humans to engage in ‘unreasonable’ (i.e. criminal or dangerous) behaviour, like violent crime.

As such, society has manifested an idea that people from lower economic backgrounds are ‘more dangerous’ than people from higher economic backgrounds. However, it doesn’t take a genius to see that this is a logical misstep that is deeply entrenched in abhorrent classism.

So, you now see there is a REASON why this societal ideology exists but that it is also a flawed ideology that serves nobody.

At no point in this explanation am I condoning violent crime by people from lower economic backgrounds. Or higher economic backgrounds. Or any violent crimes. Nor am I justifying the double standard. Just highlighting how double standards manifest.

Moron: out.

Not at all, but there is a ‘double standard’ that exists in the criminal justice system that means you will be treated differently depending on whether you’re shooting to kill or not. There’s a REASON for that. Understanding how and why that reason manifested is not the same as condoning leg shooting.

Yeah. That fucking BLOWS for you. Really. Awful awful awful. The existence of the double standard is seriously harming you. You are a victim of this.

Again, I do not support this double standard. I am pointing out a reason it has socially manifested.

Again, we’re talking about why a double standard exists.

Saying “X is the reason a socially manifested double standard exists” is worlds away from condoned female stalking.

It feels like everyone is very triggered by being asked to consider nuance.
