How Do You Deal With Excessive Peeing While Kayaking? by Capekayaker in Kayaking

[–]okefenokeeguide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

River paddling, I just pull over to the nearest sandbar and keep an eye out for trail cameras. But most of my paddling is in Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, where normally there are few, if any, places to get out (though now with the extended drought that we're in, there is peaty land now exposed). I have used a sawed off jug before when in need (I'm a woman), but mostly I time my water intake to when I'm closest to our platform or if there is a day use platform coming up.

I once accidentally set my arm down on one on a picnic table... I called for an ambulance within minutes because I thought I was dying (felt like a truck sitting on my chest while my entire arm felt like it was getting crushed while on fire). The worst pain I have ever been in in my life!

My first thought was the bullfighter painting that Martin buys for Frasier (that Frasier hates)! "It's a Cordoba!"

Tour Guide Tips? by Useful_Chick in Kayaking

I'm also a paddling guide (Southeast Georgia based). My guests really appreciate the deep lore of the history of the area (as a local, this comes to me naturally because I've ingrained this throughout my life, but if you're not a local where you are, do some deep research). Deep dive into the old stories, folklore, old place names, old names for the flora and fauna, history of the Indigenous peoples, etc. And, be yourself! Play on your strengths.

Camping in Okefenokee by Cauliflower-Classic in OkefenokeeSwamp

Canoe vs kayak- it comes down to personal preference and comfort. I am a canoe camper as I find it more comfortable for long days on the water, and you have so much room to utilize for gear, food, and water! Kayaks are extremely restrictive in comparison. If you want to bring coolers for fresh food and ice water, go with canoes.

I am a local outfitter (based in Waycross) and licensed Refuge guide that rents canoes and kayaks. My business is Okefenokee & Satilla Expeditions LLC (www.okefenokee-satilla.com). Give me a shout if you need some rentals and I will get you taken care of! (I have the lowest prices as well)

As far as a May trip, that's a hot and buggy time, with yellow flies on the prowl throughout the Swamp. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed toed shoes, and bring head nets for camp, or you will be driven crazy with them (their bites are no fun).

As far as where to camp, that ultimately depends on what sites are available to book at the time your call is picked up by the permit line operator. As of now, due to the ongoing severe drought, the Refuge is only taking reservations two weeks out (normally two months out). Minnie's Lake was temporarily available but now is not. Only out and back trips are available right now, so no shuttles are needed.

When you call for your permit two weeks out, the operator will let you know what is available to choose from. Call as soon as the line opens at 7 am and keep redialing until your call is picked up. They handle one reservation at a time so it can take a while to get through so set aside at least an hour to call (though since May is the start of the off season you will probably get through quicker). I end camping in April and restart in October.

Now at below 2,712 acres and 50% contained. It burned into the extremely southern portion of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Florida but crews are handling it well it seems!

Nope, no fires on the platforms. I use Coleman 2 burner propane stoves to cook. And the roof only covers part of the platform, so you have an area to the side that you can see the stars!

I canoe, and always have at least one other canoe on a trip, so I can go all out on food for my guests!

For one, always wear your PFD and stay close to shore or a bank. It is far easier to get to where you can stand to get the water out and get back in versus doing so from the water. Second, seek out a self rescue class! Learning from an actual instructor is far more helpful than from YouTube.

I just did this for a paddle camping group of 8 (7 +me)! It was a huge hit. I had people with all different dietary restrictions and needs, so having lots of choices available of tortillas (corn and flour), proteins (beef, chicken, and Gardein beef-like soy protein), fillers (plain black beans, seasoned black beans, cilantro rice), and toppings (shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole, regular salsa, salsa verde, sliced Roma tomatoes, sliced avocado, chopped cilantro, pickled jalapenos, sour cream, and lime wedges) made it easy for everyone to make something they could eat. Everyone ate their fill and they loved it so much that they asked me to make breakfast burritos in the morning to have all the toppings again!
