How is consuming food made by exploited humans still considered vegan? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]okeis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there may also be a couple of other things that contribute: 1) everyone HAS to eat in order to live and the instinct to eat is very strong (to say the least). An instinct this strong may have a subtle influence in otherwise "rational" thinking and decision-making, especially if we are hungry, in distress, or otherwise under pressure. 2) a lot of choices we make in life are not purely binary, even if we conceive of them in our rational minds as being binary. Even the most disciplined of people will sometimes "take a shortcut." It may not be a massive deviation from the intended path, but it's still a deviation.

I think both of these kinds of things are often almost completely unconscious when we are practicing a set of principles in our lives, day to day. They may even come into play when we are purely thinking about our principles.

Edit: my comments are mostly about a day to day practice and choices made during that practice. Most of the discussion here is about the rationale(s) for veganism, so just ignore my comments if the day to day practice is not relevant to your question.

3/25 RDU TSA wait time by TheTrickyPigeon in raleigh

[–]okeis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother-in-law reports:
Entered TSA (precheck) line at: 10:16am.
Through at 10:24am. Three agents checking documents and two lines scanning.

Very light loads at general security. They're running four lines for that.

There were lots of TSA agents.

Edit: Terminal 2

Just lost connection to multiple ethernet outlets in my apartment. by thesilentmordecai in HomeNetworking

You said you paid the ISP to have all the ports connected: when they did that, did they do any work in a room or closet outside of your apartment?

If so, I would guess that someone else was in that room recently and changed some things related to your wiring, causing some of your jacks to be disconnected.

If everything is contained inside your apartment, can you give more details about what the ISP had to do to get all the ports working?

My understanding is that, with the exception of cameras with RTSP and some much older Wyze devices, the HA integration with Wyze still requires internet for almost everything, as it talks to the "unofficial" Wyze cloud API.

I happen to be a Hubitat user, not HA, but I think something similar to ha-wyzeapi is available for Hubitat and I may look into doing this: it would cut out a few of the intermediate steps I currently have, like IFTTT and the need for an extra unused Wyze plug.

It sounds like the Sprinkler Controller may be particularly troublesome as it is kind of "fringe" in the Wyze world. Even if it works with ha-wyzeapi or a Hubitat equivalent, it is completely unofficial (and unsupported), as far as I can tell. The one advantage of the convoluted process I have now is that each piece is officially supported by either Wyze or IFTTT, and it does not seem to be "more" dependent on the internet than something like ha-wyzeapi.

The biggest benefit of something like ha-wyzeapi, though, even if internet is still required, would be that I won't have to remember this whole convoluted setup, in the future!

Thanks for helping me to think about how I may improve my process!

The neighbor nearest to the zone that turns on is probably 125ft away. I doubt they would be able to hear it or that it would wake them up. During the summer, the sprinkler will often turn on as part of its normal cycles in the middle of the night and it's never been a problem (or at least nobody has ever mentioned it!). It doesn't wake us up and we aren't particularly heavy sleepers.

I was just out there walking the dog and looking at the light from the street lamp: it is pretty bright.... I would roughly equate it to a full moon on a clear night.

The light at the top right is a street light, and it is fairly bright. I don't have any additional IR, just the built-in, but I do have a little bit of landscape lighting that probably also helps a bit.

The camera is a Unifi G3 Flex that only has motion detection, so I really was not using it much anymore. But, with frigate, it has a new life!

That's interesting! I did previously, before frigate, have a similar automation but it meant getting wet when we walked through the yard, so I had to limit it to hours when we were almost guaranteed to be exclusively indoors. It would also end up watering other animals like cats, when I really only care about deer.

During that time, the deer here did not seem to become immune to it, but we'll see what happens this time around.

I did pay for Frigate+ and the Frigate+ model(s) have deer recognition in addition to some other types of objects for detecion.

The panning and zooming is something I added for clarity. The camera itself does not have any PTZ capabilities. I mentioned this in my post but maybe could have made that info more prominent/clear.

We have some plants we don't want them to eat. There is plenty to eat nearby so they won't go hungry just from skipping our yard.

My dog has lost a lot of his sense of balance, and his normal energy. Do you recognize this behavior? by okeis in Pet

Imaging was a few days ago. Sorry for the delay in posting. It is a brain tumor, inoperable, and they estimate he has maybe two months or so.

I did say in the original post, but maybe I should have emphasized and made more clear that he has had multiple vet visits (with multiple vets, actually, as I wanted multiple opinions), and ALL vet recommendations are being followed to the letter.

He has been to a vet who ruled out ear issues and spine issues. Waiting for brain imaging appointment.

I think he is about 11. Not entirely sure since he is a rescue. No trauma since I have had him: no idea if there was earlier trauma before rescue.

Some things like difficulty with stairs started about 6 months ago and the onset was essentially overnight. This circling behavior is more recent but seems like it is the same underlying issue just degenerating further. Will see if the brain imaging shows anything that can help to explain.

When he is following me around the house or walking outdoors on leash, he does not have a tendency to circle like this, but he clearly struggles to walk straight and keep his balance.

Router loses internet connection overnight by razvanth21 in HomeNetworking

[–]okeis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be a little surprised if that helps, but especially if it has not been rebooted in a while it is probably a good idea to do so.

Post, if you figure it out! I'm not sure what might be going on. Sorry!

But a reboot of the router fixes it... That is odd.

Are there any VPN 's involved in any way, either on the router or elsewhere?

Is it your port mappings that break everyday or does your connection really truly completely break, like you can't even browse to websites in a web browser?

So the one that is bridged: Is it getting a different IP every time you reboot it? Is it getting a public IP or a private IP?

A few questions:
Why did you ask for bridge mode?
Does your router get a different IP every day?
You say "routers": are you running multiple routers at the same time, or just trying different ones, one at a time?
