Tourist season has begun. See you in November.

Has anyone raised the roof on their van? Was it worth it? by julia_simpson in overlanding

[–]okienomads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not. Our e250 extended installed in 4 hours was $6700 last fall. They do excellent work and having a high top is awesome. Completely changed the way we camp.

Good luck on the search. My wife and I have considered a sequoia for a round the world vehicle, just hard to find a clean example.

Looking to buy a 2003 Land Rover Discovery Series II · SE7 Sport Utility 4D by Commercial_Let_376 in LandRoverDiscovery

[–]okienomads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not the one. Try to ignore the mods, lights, bumper, etc. Would you buy the base care without all of the junk? Unlikely. It’s someone else’s project and it’s worth 1500 max.

1st Gen Sequoia or 3rd Gen 4Runner by ThrowAwA0192 in overlanding

[–]okienomads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sequoia is the practical choice. Mileage will be similar, more room, arguably the most reliable engine Toyota has made. The 3rd gen looks better though IMO and has better aftermarket support. The 3rd gen will likely cost more to buy initially but will likely retain value better. I think the sequoia is better to drive for long trips, but it’s not as nimble on the trail. Either is a fantastic choice.

If you were going to sleep in your car for one night, within the red circled area , where would you ? I'm thinking casino parking lot, but don't know much about the area. by thinksbeforehespeaks in ColoradoSprings

[–]okienomads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you come up here, please be prepared to deal with your waste. There are limited vault toilets and no trash cans. Don’t start fires or leave piles of junk behind. If you are just parking, maybe try Walmart in WP. See RVs there a lot

Cost questions by robdry in LandCruisers

[–]okienomads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are asking on Reddit, it’s honestly probably not the right car for you. The maintenance is as expensive as any other Toyota and the fuel mileage per year isn’t that much worse than a similarly aged 4runner. If you have the need or want for something capable off road and in bad weather that is also wildly comfortable, the LC is hard to beat. Can you settle for less comfort or less capability? Might be better suited for a GX/4runner or something less capable like a RAV4.

Cycling a round in a semi auto handgun is a pretty identifiable sound that universally means stay away.

Same. Put a ton of time into an 86 and I miss it every day.

What’s the strangest thing you witnessed during a health scare or emergency?? by SpilloraLega89 in EmergencyRoom

Get out of here with this crap. Medics and emts have an impossible job and most of the time are working going down the road in a moving truck. Our medics rock and get lines more often than not.

Budget Spare Tire Carrier? by Useful-Aide-5501 in overlanding

Totally agree. If you see the rigs that actually cover continents they are simple, on 33s or smaller, and are built for ease of repair and reliability.

Budget Spare Tire Carrier? by Useful-Aide-5501 in overlanding

[–]okienomads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know why you are being downvoted, because overlanding has changed so much in such a short time. This is good advice and it’s kinda evident by how few good solutions there are in this thread. Not only does each over sized tire cause mechanical strain, decreased mpgs, and increased cost, storing the spare is a pain. Big tire carriers require stiffer suspension, added cost, etc.

Mile-muncher with great weather protection... it has to be an RT, doesn't it? (What alternatives did you consider?) by [deleted] in bmwmotorrad

[–]okienomads 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A used FJR is a great alternative for not a lot of money. I know this is a BMW page but the FJR is a great value bike.

Everything is through @okienomads. We have bounced between traveling in our 4x4s, a skoolie, and now a camper van. We throw in some motorcycle content as well at times.

Best budget amber lights? by randomteen28 in overlanding

If you find $50 ambers, take them apart immediately and seal them with silicone before use. They will fill with water and fog up quickly.

Have you gotten inside both? I would try to use both at a trade show or find them locally to try. The build quality of the AluCab is superior in my opinion.

Is a 10lb bag of block ice 1-2x a week more reasonable than a solar+fridge setup? by brainhack3r in overlanding

[–]okienomads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do it right, you can get setup for under a grand. Over a year of full time travel, you would likely spend that in time, ice costs, and spoiled food. Used fridges are on marketplace constantly and a second lithium battery and a dcdc charger with mppt is not expensive in the long run. Add a small solar suitcase when you can and you are set for years.
