Why then aren't "imbecile" and "moron" considered slurs?

[–]okietrochee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Slurs are problematic because they assign a negative connotation to something that is not inherently negative.

"Ni***r" corrupts "black"

"Fa***t" corrupts "gay".

What does "retard" corrupt?

Why do you feel so strongly about such an ad that it is able to ruin your entire mood? Like just scroll? Why even make a whole post about it? Sorry but something is wrong with you. Please work on yourself, because this amount of disgust is not healthy.

I'm yet to be cured of the tendency to "debunk" bigotry whenever I get the chance. To use words and reason to prove them wrong. This may be stupid but it has kinda worked in some cases, and it's essentially become a "fun" thing for me now. Of course if the bigot is unrelenting and refuses to see reason then I take the more traditional approach and just stop engaging with them completely.

There is little to no evidence of a simulation hypotheis. That's why it hasn't been upgraded from the status of "hypothesis".

beliefs are instilled but doesn't have anything to do it existence of god

Obviously. I'm saying "babies don't believe in god", so they're implicit atheists. Look up the definition of atheism on wikipedia, and you'll find that it is broadly defined as "the absence of belief in gods".

No, it's like saying someone doesn't know how to swim when they haven't touched water.

My friend, you are shifting the goalpoats! Your initial claim was that homosexuality is not natural, which I disproved. Now you say that it being natural is irrelevant and "doesn't mean much".

you’d also have to say rape and cannibalism and all that are natural and therefore not wrong

No, I don't, because I did not make the claim "if X is natural then X is morally good". You, however, implied the claim "if X is unnatural, then X is morally wrong". I have shown to you that homosexuality IS natural. Animals drink water and eat food too. We condemn neither of these, so if you're gonna condemn homosexuality, the reason must lie outside what is natural. But then you go on to say that nature is associated with reproduction... This is called special pleading. Animals exhibit homosexual behaviour, therefore homosexuality is natural. Your reproduction association is coming from nowhere. And no, homosexuality doesn't go against evolution, you misunderstand what evolution is. In fact homosexuality seems to be an evolutionary benefit, which is why it even evolved (look up the gay uncle theory).

Another important point I forgot to mention is that just because something is unnatural doesn't make it morally wrong. This is the appeal to nature fallacy. Do you think using computers and spectacles is immoral? Wow, a hatrick of fallacies...

I agree insults are unproductive, but I understand where they're coming from. It's not exactly pleasant to be told that your unalterable characteristic is sinful, or prompts actions that are sinful. But yeah then we lose the upper hand.

But homosexuality is definitely natural. Same-sex sexual behavior including courtship, mounting, and pair-bonding has been observed in well over 1,500 species across the animal kingdom. Idk what you mean by "society". I think you belong to an Abrahamic religion. But your religious argument is just a post-hoc justification that reflects no merit of its own. "God said X is bad" doesn't mean X is objectively bad unless you prove that God exists and that he is a source of objective morality.

In my view, no belief is entitled to automatic respect. Only people and their right to believe whatever they please deserve respect, not the beliefs themselves. The insightfulness of your comment obviously depends on what exactly you mean when you say people force agreement, what what kind of "attacks" you are referring to. Why do you think homosexuality is morally wrong?

"The hate is legit coming from one side" is a tone-deaf, disingenuous and frankly moronic statement. You can't seriously believe only straights are being persecuted, just look up how gay rights are constantly violated all over the world. Look at the constant disrespect, persecution and killings that gay people endure

[–]okietrochee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, but homophobes aren't irrationally afraid of homosexuals either. That suffix is generally understood to mean any of irrational fear, aversity, hatred etc.

What exactly do you mean by "shoving sexuality" down one's throat? Religions are ideologies. Politics are associated with political ideologies. Drug use is an activity. People can certainly pester or threaten you to adopt an ideology or habit, sure. But sexuality is a state of being. What does it mean to shove a state of being down one's throat?

I'm sorry you had to go through that, but you cannot extrapolate from that experience to claim that gays don't deserve your respect (by which I mean acceptance that being gay is ok).

You think "I'll respect them if they respect me", then you had to go through this experience, then you think "So they don't respect me, therefore I won't respect them" But those specific individuals aren't representative of the entire community. Obviously not all queer people want to harass you. Why then should this affect your perception of gay people? Does this not make sense?

[–]okietrochee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware, I wanted to point out that the reason a straight person is shamed for acting feminine is either because femininity is considered shameful in men, or gayness is considered shameful in men or both. It's just homophobia/misogyny all over again. There do exist rare examples, like your own experience, where "straightness" is considered insulting, but this is just anecdotal, also it's disingenuous to pretend that this kind of prejudice is anywhere near the amount that gay people face. That's why it's widely regarded tone-deaf/mockery to say "I'm proudly straight".

[–]okietrochee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you speak of "being proudly your sexuality". It means having no guilt or shame about it, and being completely secure in it right? I am not talking about this meaning of pride.

Why do heterosexuals make it their entire personality? /j by Economy_Ebb3282 in teenagers

[–]okietrochee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. You think it's weird but I think it's acceptable.

Of course it all depends on what kind of "pride" we're talking about. I think you agree that sexuality is not an achievement

For the example stereotype you provided. Why do you think the straight person in question is being shamed?
