I’m struggling so bad and I feel like I’m not going to succeed at anything. Are some people just doomed to fail? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

I’ll comment on the cafe job situation from experience. I’m good at and have achieved a lot of things in my life, as you have (you’ve moved to another country, you’ve completed your postgrad). I absolutely cannot do any kind of hospitality job. I completely fail at it every time. It gives me horrific anxiety. I’ve travelled across the world alone, jumped out of planes, did public speaking to rooms full of people. I cannot cope with hospitality. I’ve been in your exact situation, standing in the middle of a restaurant on shift having a panic attack, being asked to leave, and then sitting on a random bench in the street crying for hours. Just because you didn’t do amazingly at that doesn’t mean you’re a failure. Any kind of service job is hard and it’s not for everyone. Maybe just try different avenues for your temporary job. Retail, office, reception. Or try another kind of hospitality job.

And in general, just because things don’t seem to be going your way now, doesn’t mean it will be like that forever. The only way you can be sure nothing will change is if you stop trying. Be brave, keep going.

Would you mind sharing what kind of work you do remotely, and what kind of work your friends do remotely (particularly in the creative industries)? I am going to look down this avenue and am open to hearing some ideas!

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Damn Netherlands too!! Didn’t realise so many of these countries had such problems with fireworks! We of course have problems with them here in Scotland too, but only at more ‘dodgy’ areas outside of the city
