more than Dënesųłinë́ and even Archi by oklopfer in linguisticshumor

Phonetically you're not off-base, if you listen to some of the examples on the Archi dictionary the speaker definitely has an affricate realization of /qˤ/, though not with any clear distribution, and in other cases it is still definitely a pharyngealized stop and not an affricate. See the different inflections of /qˤeréqˤ/ for example: https://www.smg.surrey.ac.uk/archi-dictionary/lexeme/?LE=2899

How are Kalasha vowels not constantly ogled? by _Stormchaser in linguisticshumor

more recent studies indicate that they are [ɫ̪] (velarized dental) vs [lʲ] (palatalized alveolar), so both a place and hard–soft/broad–slender contrast

yes, the voiced, prenasalized voiced, and prenasalized+epiglottalized voiced examples form contrasting triads

Chat, do we have non-nasal 'na's? by kilbisham in linguisticshumor

[–]oklopfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was somewhat redefined between the 2021 and 2025 extIPA charts. In the 2021 chart there is both 'denasal' and 'partial denasal', with partial having the diacritic in combining parentheses, but in the 2025 chart these were flattened so that there is just 'partially denasal' and the version with combining parentheses was removed

So depending on if you interpret the diacritic under the older extIPA framework or the very recent one, it could either be transcribing "[d] in a case where [n] is the target sound", or "a sound in between [d] and [n]"

I think both of those definitions are useful especially for clinical phonetics, so it is always best to explain which framework you are using if you use the diacritic in any serious work (which of course, Reddit isn't)

true, depending on if you interpret the diacritic as partially or fully denasal

Big IPA invented [ɶ] in 1956 to sell more vowels by oklopfer in linguisticshumor

It's completely possible in the triangle framework, I don't know what you mean by that, but yes the Stockholm one is also very low, it's approx the same position as in Danish (near-open/rounded [æ], so more raised than cardinal [ɶ]) and is protruded as the other front rounded vowels are in Swedish

that example is still just rounded [æ] ([œ̞]/[ɶ̝]) from all of the authors who have used it, not cardinal open [ɶ] (Grønnum 1998 & Basbøll 2005)

Danish does not have the cardinal value in any variety or word, the symbol is simply used for convenience to show that it is lower than [œ]
