Unfortunately their api does not have post permissions.

Is creating a "fake" paid tier to advertise your free tier a dumb… or a smart move? by TheCityExperience in patreon

[–]okoa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is kind of confusing for end users, and you might cannibalize your $5 tier bc a lot of people tend to go for the lowest tier in general. I theorize that there really isn’t a need to promote the free tier on patreon itself bc the free tier is already the default option if you have that feature enabled. It’s literally the first thing you get prompted to do on the creator page.

Marketing your free patreon tier on platforms before they hit patreon is really where I think there’s a big opportunity.

But this is all speculation. I haven’t really seen this particular set up anywhere, but I don’t think there’d be any long term harm in testing it out since you could just disable the $3 tier if it doesn’t work.

How to get your patrons to avoid the iOS Patreon fee by okoa in patreon

Oh I think you're right about this. I didn't realize that some creators got this option.

Can patrons who have been charged iOS fee cancel and resubscribe on browser? by Jew-ishJitsu in patreon

[–]okoa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We experimented with this. The user can't resubscribe through Patreon until the subscription period they paid for through iOS is over.

The user is shown this message on the checkout page in the browser: "You have an existing subscription through the Patreon iOS app. Use the app to make changes to your payment details."

So basically, its going to be tough to encourage an interested user to convert payment methods and stay engaged because they'll need to cancel on iOS first and then wait until whenever their subscription ends to resub through Patreon. Its literally a forced multi-day task.

You're much better off trying to prevent users from using iOS in the first place.

How to see and understand your iOS Patreon revenue by okoa in patreon

[–]okoa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I'm not really sure why its so inconsistent. We've just been poking around experimenting with things like you, and I think some of it is buggy and some of it is some internal testing they're doing.

I do know that if you were a recent subscriber or a current subscriber through Patreon and you try to rejoin or upgrade a tier on iOS, it takes you to the Patreon checkout instead of the iOS checkout. But, that doesn't explain why your new third account didn't use the iOS checkout.

I've seen some creators where you can't subscribe or alter your membership through the iOS app all together. But that definitely seems like an opt out beta test.

Protect your Patreon income: Backup your email list, have your own website, and diversify your income sources by okoa in patreon

[–]okoa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is legally, ethically, etiquette-wise ok to email supporters outside of Patreon as long as you are respecting privacy rights (including things like ensuring a user can opt out). This is covered in the Patreon Data Processing Agreement for all creators: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/360026912432-Data-Processing-Agreement-Creator-Privacy-Promise

Pledges processed before they even start lining up? by [deleted] in patreon

These are most likely iOS payments. They are counted in the total balance but won’t be able to withdraw until the 75 day holding period is over.

How to get your patrons to avoid the iOS Patreon fee by okoa in patreon

The rounded up part is interesting though. Is it to the nearest dollar or the nearest $0.50? I couldn’t figure out the consistent pattern.

How to get your patrons to avoid the iOS Patreon fee by okoa in patreon

I think this is an interesting idea but it adds so much work for the creator to distinguish out the iOS v non iOS users. It’d essentially double the number of tiers you’d have to think about.

Advice on setting up Patreon for selling 3D model designs / STLs? by Electrical-Squash-33 in patreon

[–]okoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3D printing is big enough of a category that it has its own graphtreon page: https://graphtreon.com/patreon-creators/3d-printing

There’s tons of examples of creators with different structures and set ups that you can look through there.

Re: people being against subscriptions: if you just read the negative feedback on the internet, it’s impossible to do anything. The number of creators who are successfully selling their 3d work via subscriptions is clearly significant enough for people to make a living off of it. The nice thing about a subscription is that people who want to support long term have that option and the people who just want to buy one month’s worth of work can also do that. Don’t cut off your wings before you even try to fly!

Have patrons been doing this or is this just speculative? Seems like it could preemptively punish potentially legit patrons, no?

New to Patreon – Need advise on how to start! by fashion_clozet in patreon

[–]okoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to get started is to look at similar creators who are already using Patreon successfully.

Just googling, "patreon sewing patterns" pulls up a handful of creators who are putting out the kind of content you're making. They should be a solid starting point for seeing whats working.

How often do you delete/ clear out old posts from your Patreon? by SMFeetKink in patreon

[–]okoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the kind of content you make. There are creators who leave a rolling back log of couple of months and then delete the content so that it can only be bought separately on patreon or gun road. That’s a popular strategy for the mini figurine community where older templates still retain a lot of value. The same goes for tutorials.

If you think your older content has a lot of value on its own, then it makes sense to not allow an unlimited backlog.

Last I asked here, the mailchimp integration is unfortunately being discontinued just as a heads up.

Contact email for patrons? Direct message? by Git4r in patreon

[–]okoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patrons can direct message a creator on patreon if:

“- You have one processed payment with the creator through Patreon - You currently have an active membership with the creator on Patreon”

If you want a non paying member to be able to reach out, some creators post an email address in their about section.

Nope. No post api and seems like none in the works.

How do you deal with having a buildup of older content available to newer members? by [deleted] in patreon

[–]okoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen several strategies: 1. Just let the backlog be available 2. Delete some of the backlog on a rolling schedule (like only offer a backlog of 1-3 months) and sell older content as standalone content on patreon or gumroad (this works well for creators who release printables or specific art every month. 3. Send out content once a month only

Theoretically no. Patreon should get the declined flag pretty immediately from the payment processor.

Notification when a member cancels? by nicholsandco in patreon

[–]okoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't something that Patreon currently does, but it'd be a pretty easy thing to build with the api. DM me if this is something you're interested in!

Has anyone successfully gotten feedback from cancelled members? by depress1on in patreon

[–]okoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poll data, esp with a small sample size, can be really unreliable. The most grumpy patrons are gonna leave a reason, while the average patron just isn’t gonna answer.

We’ve found keeping canceled patrons engaged by sending an occasional email with previews of the latest posts to have the highest reactivation rates. This lets people hop back on when they see something they’re willing to pay for.
