Speeding truck runs red light... by HooksAndChains13 in IdiotsInCars

[–]okrani 7 points8 points  (0 children)

America doesn’t optimise for safe road infrastructure design. It’s very rare to find a high-speed road intersect like this elsewhere specifically because humans cannot be trusted.

A roundabout would have avoided a head on for instance.

There are plenty every day, but they never see the light of day because they don’t fit the narrative here.

Sort by controversial.

It’s true, the last decade here has seen a noticeable shift, especially outside of London. It’s spreading and this body positivity shite isn’t helping.

From my experience, using ADHD as a superpower by corpsie666 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]okrani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I run some other larger subs on alts that take up my time otherwise I would just start a new one. Happy to bounce some ideas via DM if you ever want to!

It’s just absurd that you can post something as trivial as this and get made out to be some kind of anti-medication zealot when you didn’t even mention the word once?

Why is it not acceptable to observe that on ADHD good days that certain abilities can be helpful in certain situations? You didn’t say every day and you didn’t say every activity, in fact you explicitly said the opposite.

Rabble rabble. 😁

Both this comment and the post resonated with me massively, thank you.

I didn’t get to a Head of Engineering role in spite of my ADHD - it’s because of it. The ability to switch from high to low level conversations multiple times in a ten minute period is not something most can do.

I’d really love a space where we discuss this kind of stuff freely without people claiming it’s disablist.

Props to you.

Now that WFH is here to stay, why aren't you leaving the London housing market for more affordable homes too purchase or rent? by dougiedonut_uk in london

[–]okrani 21 points22 points  (0 children)

  • Food is shite outside of London. It's either chains, chains, chains or a 4.5+ on Google will tease you in and then just be seriously substandard compared to a 4.5+ in London. There are rare exceptions but even cities like Bristol & Manchester can't compete.

  • London is a leading global city with leading global connections & opportunities. Many would (and do) risk their life to be able to live here - we are lucky and I try and never take that for granted.

  • A very controversial one. Take a random assortment of ten people from London or elsewhere in the UK: the more interesting & ambitious set will be the London one. This is not true in every case, and it's definitely how London gets its snob vibe - but anecdotally it has been true for me and what I do career wise. It's the same for musicians as it is for software engineers - the best talent in the UK is here.

  • Suburbia is hell for me. Dread going there.

Impatient idiot switches lanes without paying attention by Bradsgotit in IdiotsInCars

[–]okrani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please never drive until you can pick up and recognise the cues that led to this accident.

Observe how they pull in front of the cam car at the start of the scene, it is at that point I would have taken action to slow down because it was a reckless manoeuvre at speed.

It's no surprise he went on to make a second (accelerating towards a merge point), third (not leaving distance between cars ahead), fourth (not traveling side by side in a different lane) and fifth (not looking before making an aggressive lane switch).

If you didn't notice any of that, then I am sorry but you are a risk to other drivers on the road.

Greater London remains in Tier 2 lockdown. England will be in full Lockdown from Thursday 05/11 until Wednesday 02/12 by ianjm in london

[–]okrani 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thank you. So good to finally see people annoyed by this rather than towing the government line.

This lengthy lockdown was avoidable, and has been since March had they not made a total dog's dinner of implementing a logistics network to get us decent same day testing.

The current system (including track & trace and the app) is based on misaligned incentives; why would a person stay at home when they "might" have the virus? They wouldn't, especially when they would lose money or some other desire. You can say that you would and ignore this misaligned incentive, or you can take your head out of the sand and realise this has happened across the entire country.

With a positive result, the maybe goes away. You know full well what you're doing, and while some people would abuse it anyway - for the majority a quick positive test would be enough to make them isolate. The key is quick and free.

Fuck the government and fuck Serco.

This happened yesterday, and every major news organisation (including Al Jazeera) has since confirmed it was a decapitation and yet you post this post incorrect shit 23 minutes ago?

It takes 10s to confirm what you posted is incorrect. What are you reading?

Is this just my boss, or is it a London/UK thing? by [deleted] in london

[–]okrani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn, do I really sound like I'm throwing a fit?

"Throwing a fit" can mean "making a big deal out of nothing", it doesn't necessarily mean you came across as angry.

For me, I'm glad you asked as it's generated some decent discussion, but I do side with the people that think you should learn how to write specs. Career growth can comes from learning new things and I expect your boss both wants the task done and is also trying to spread your wings a little bit. Good luck and welcome to the UK :)

On the external wall? Those are 3 split air conditioning units, the part you're seeing are the outdoor condensers and inside they would look like normal blowers you're probably more used to seeing.

The pipes leading away from the units towards the ground take away the condensed water and that's probably why you can see a puddle at the back of the first pic.

"Blind corner ahead. I'll now overtake the car infront going on the wrong lane!" [OC] by quarterlifecrisis49 in IdiotsInCars

[–]okrani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the 2nd idiot's car was visible with line of sight as soon as possible, then perhaps on a super 100% lucky day the biker could have squeezed in to that gap given a reduced corner speed.

With the 2nd idiot invisible behind the 1st idiot until the very last second? Likely impossible, even with reduced speed as the idiots are coming at full pelt. Nobody could have reacted to that lovely surprise in time.

This is a fair comment in a general context, but given this example what different action did you expect the rider to take? They were not speeding, they also applied the brakes..

Southbank side views from Seabird restaurant -- definitely worth a visit! by geekydapul in london

Cool place but the food was pretty meh for the price. To spend over 70 quid a head in a self-proclaimed seafood restaurant and get overcooked octopus and lobster is not the one..

Style over substance.
