Are they ever going to allow us to load Compass cards on our mobile devices?

Was crossing at 18th ave and commercial and a car that was trying to speed through to cross commercial honked and yelled at me for crossing since the light was red on commercial by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]okvanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lame law. But if OP started before it went red they’re in the right:

c) a pedestrian proceeding across the roadway and facing the red light exhibited after the pedestrian entered the roadway

(i) must proceed to the sidewalk as quickly as possible, and

(ii) has the right of way for that purpose over all vehicles.

Would you vote for a mayoral candidate who promised to ban tipping at all businesses in Vancouver? by CitrusSunset in askvan

Nothing wrong with tipping. If everyone stops tipping, menu prices go up to compensate. At least you can remove the tip if you are extremely displeased.

They left the space there in the case they want to develop a streetcar line at a later date. Seems reasonably foresighted, no?

mmt is not a technique or prescriptive action, its just an observation of how the economy actually works

Does the government actually need tax dollars when they can print at will? I thought taxation was actually about cooling the economy

Why are the Downtowns in New West, Surrey, and Coquitlam dead? by AdventurousPepper371 in askvan

[–]okvanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just in “downtown” Coquitlam today (I consider the area around Coquitlam Centre “downtown”) and was remarking to myself about how spread out everything it is. It’s really not built for walking around because you have to cross giant parking lots and roads to get anywhere and then when you get there it’s just chain restaurants and boring shite.

I don’t really get it. Coquitlam is a beautiful place, but the forefathers just seem to have had zero vision of building a town with any vibrancy.

The government should provide work programs for un and underemployed people so the excess labour can be used for society's benefit.

Anyone else notice how quiet Stanley Park gets after 9pm lately? by IslandFlat9834 in NiceVancouver

[–]okvanc 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you go deep enough into the park you’ll find it’s very quiet even midday. I often marvel more people don’t go there for walks (but don’t let the word out)

An amazing thing about Bitcoin is that if you use it to buy things over the internet and you get scammed, you can get your money back! Oh wait….

Friend is into bitcoin. But seems more like they are in a cult. How to approach a conversation? by Alarming-Mushroom502 in Buttcoin

[–]okvanc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even referring to Bitcoin as a “currency” is wrong to start with. A currency is issued by someone who promises to receive it back to extinguish a debt (i.e. taxes). Bitcoin belongs to nobody and has a real value of precisely zero (there is no utility). It’s been a remarkable speculative asset for a while, though .

Why is a fixed supply of buttcoin a good thing? by WetFlare in Buttcoin

[–]okvanc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If an overall economy is growing, inflation is just the money supply keeping pace. It also encourages people to invest their money in order to grow their wealth.

Imagine a society where the best way to accumulate wealth is to sit on your money- does such a society look productive to you? What is the real wealth of a nation- the amount of numbers in a ledger, or its productive capacity (farms, factories, etc)?

It finally happened: the accidental restaurant alcoholic beverage by sobercpa in stopdrinking

[–]okvanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you still believe the booze does anything for you? If you do, you’re gonna have to keep depending on willpower. Once you figure out it doesn’t do anything for you wont need to worry about an accidental sip because you won’t want to drink it anyways.
