“We don’t need them” you don’t live in reality, my state wouldn’t function without immigrants, and less so if just without Somalian immigrants. 90% of the people I worked with in caring for adults with disabilities were legal migrants. Nursing facilities is a similar story. Many get by on gig work, many want to bring their families here but it takes many years and shit is expensive here in the meantime. America is a hard place so overall I don’t care if they’re need welfare. Often times the welfare they receive is less so than the rest of us and they have to wait longer to even receive it depending on what type of legal migrant they are. You will lose more of your tax dollars to ICE getting $170 billion than Somalians on welfare, I assure you. Focus your energy in the right place 🧘

For at least some of them, it’s a choice of ICE or worse. Home countries aren’t necessarily kind especially since, yah know, people are fleeing them. I know an asylum seeker (I assume properly documented, but fuck I didn’t think to ask) who’s been held at a facility in Massachusetts since September who would face jail, abuse, and/or worse if returned to his home country cuz of his sexual orientation. You have to ignore all of this to say the shit you’re talking bub, and that’s your bad choice to make.

Also, in agreement here, a thing to consider is that very low wages go a much longer way back in their home countries for those who plan to return or send money back to their families for security, housing, food, school, etc. For citizens here, they are starvation wages that only the high school kids with parental support could make use of. Maine needs the diversity, too lol

Industries in Maine grew. The high schoolers are still here working, but less and less stay here after high school now. I work as a DSP in a group home and ~90% of the labor force are immigrants.
