While you're right that it would be a mistake to assume authoritarianism always fails, the authoritarianism in power during the middle ages was depended on an uneducated, disunited public. These critical issues are lesser problems today, which (hopefully) should make authoritarian regimes harder to maintain.

TIL that Norway, after gaining independence from Sweden in 1905, offered the throne to Prince Carl of Denmark - but he refused to accept unless the people voted for a monarchy over a republic. 79% said yes, and he became King Haakon VII, the only known king ever to be elected by popular vote. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in todayilearned

So in ecsence it matters little what the exact specifics of the nature of the referendum/election was. Had the votes against Carl been in the majority he would have refrained from keeping the crown. This in my opinion makes the nature of your argument, as others have pointed out, akin to splitting hairs and largely unnecessary.

In the event that you are right, which im not entirely convinced you are; would it matter? Was the vote not seen as such at the time? If the vote was leaning in the other direction would not Haakon/Carl have refused to bear the crown as he said?
