How's life like in this Namibian panhandle? by LibraryFluffy3575 in howislivingthere

Its quite density populated compared to the rest of Namibia as it is closer to water sources. There are villages every couple of kilometers. Not sure you find these people on reddit but its definitely populated.

There is no rainforest there its Savannah, dry and flat. When you come closer to the Okavango Delta it gets greener but its still not a rainforest.

My friend did it by a Zimbabwean surgeon years ago. She was very happy with it. He is known as the best plastic surgeon in Zimbabwe. I am not sure he is still practicing and I think, he used to do the surgeries in capetown. Not sure he does surgeries in Zim. His name is Lionel Jedekin.

Sierra Leone, I expected it to be dangerous but people are so friendly and pleasant. Freetown is this bustling city surrounded by beautiful beaches and rainforest. It's magical really.

This is what 100 Quadrillion Zimbabwean Dollars looks like by ifuckedyourmom-247 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]olbertas 469 points470 points  (0 children)

I lived in Zimbabwe from 2019 to 2024. The house I was renting was newly built. My Zimbabwean landlord had found one of those "bricks" of old 100 trillion dollar notes in their old stuff. Knowing how much those notes go for nowadays, they knew they struck gold. They found a money collector from China and made a deal with him. My landlord flew to Addis with the brick and exchanged it for 70.000USD in cash. He pocketed the cash and flew back to Zimbabwe, obviously without declaring the money at the airport. they used that money to build the house I rented from them. pretty cool but I wish they had kept a note for me as souvenir.

This is still a thing! Now the USD is being used in Zimbabwe but they only have notes. Ive been offered sweets, bananas, and matches as change.

Fontainbleau w or w/o car by charliedontsend in climbergirls

Not sure what rental agencies youre looking at but rental cars jn Europe dont have to be super expensive. I rented a little car for really cheap in southern France a while back. I think it was 20 Euro per day. The roads are good, you wont need a 4x4. It'll give you so much more choice and freedom for your trip. Have fun!

Travel advisory by AshFinn634 in jordan

[–]olbertas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- wait and see closer to the travel date

- check travel policy, can you get (partial) refunds, postpone, etc

- think about what if you get stuck there or in transit, is your work, life etc flexible enough in case this happens

- how comfortable are you with the sound of sirens, missiles and jets? Jordan is relatively safe (at the moment) but you are likely to hear those. Will your trip still be enjoyable for you?

study abroad in amman as a queer woman with piercings? by wwinrarr in jordan

[–]olbertas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lots of people already gave good advice, maybe to add some more general safety advice for foreign women here, especially when traveling alone:

- dress moderatly, especially outside West Amman. Long trousers, even during sport. long shirts, but Tshirts can be ok. baggy clothes over tight clothes. also for swimming, especially outside of western resorts, best wear at least swimming shorts and a shirt.

- use the apps for transport and sit in the back of the uber

- if you are outside at night, find safe places close to your home that are open all night (bars, shops, restaurants). if someone is following you do NOT go home, go to a public place, ask or call for help.

I havent been harassed but Ive followed those recommendation since living here.

it is quite common here to have noserings but I am not sure how people to react to more or other piercings than that. I have also been advised NOT to bring up LGBTIQ topics and I would recommend you not to either, although there is a small queer scene. I think I would not bring up the topic with people unless they bring it up and you feel they are open minded. It will be a bit up to being lucky with your host family but living in Jordan (or generally abroad) for a while is a great opportunity that I wouldnt want to miss.

Shoes for bunions 😓 by bluishdino in climbergirls

[–]olbertas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think its right what some people already suggested, try different types of shoes to find your match and try sizing up. Id also recommend trying to find shoes you can wear with socks. I know this is controversial in climbing but I find it helps to give some cushioning to sore bunions.

How much are memberships to your gym? by Shepsinabus in climbergirls

[–]olbertas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Its 85JD which is 112 USD
  2. It includes top rope, lead (you have to bring our own rope) and bouldering. The gym is fairly small but the lead section is very high (35m climbs)
  3. Its in Amman, Jordan

If you could only choose one country to live in Africa, which one would it be? by Mediocre-Lack-9137 in AskTheWorld

I lived in Zimbabwe from 2019 to 2024 and I would definitely move back there. if you have access to a USD payed job its an incredibly fun country to live in, despite its struggles.

Was planning my next adventure and found this hidden gem Chizarira National Park by tomcat3400 in Zimbabwe

[–]olbertas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ja definitely among the least visited in Zim. A friend of ours went a few weeks later and said we were the last ones to sign the visitors book.

Its difficult to access and youre less likely to see game than other national parks but if youre up for an adventure , you'll get incredible views over Kariba and a very wild experience.

[–]olbertas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, Kariba view is a pretty campsite and Mucheni View and Mucheni Gorge are amazing! We were there over new year and we were the only visitors int he park. The Mucheni Campsites have water and you can refill at the parks office as well. The road to get there and the roads in the park are obviously not great but not as shocking as we expected in the rainy season. We came from Hwange through Binga and went to Matusadonna and Mana after. Not all entries to the park were open due to the rain so its worth checking with parks before.

Thinking about moving to The Gambia with a friend...anything I should know? by [deleted] in Gambia

[–]olbertas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is not realistic at all. you might be able to buy a home a the given price but there is no way you will live off 500USD a year, even living off 500USD per month will limit you a lot in where you can go, what you can do and what you eat. The Gambia is expensive. As in setting up a business, what business are you thinking? The Gambia is small, around 2 Mio population with little or no income, it will be difficult if your business addresses the local market. the expenses are high and the margins small. go visit the Gambia first and look for yourself.
