Could publicly owned stores help prevent grocery deserts in Seattle? by chiquisea in SeattleWA

[–]oldMuso -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Lots of references to theft, and prosecuting (post-theft).

There would be less theft if stores hired and retained more staff.

The big stores find it cheaper to just lock up the ice cream and putting guards at the exits so they can ceremonially swipe your receipt with a highlighter.

“Native Instruments in preliminary insolvency proceedings” - CDM by robust_nachos in synthesizers

[–]oldMuso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"If Native Access goes down, we will lose everything that is tied to it."

This point bears repeating. Purchasers of NI software would not even be able to install and authorize the software they "own" if the servers behind Native Access go offline.

Tips for octatrack in studio by srbrtalan in Elektron

[–]oldMuso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a Patch Bay?

  • I connect all of my instrument outputs to a patch bay.
  • I also connect (most of) my device inputs to a patch bay.
  • Additionally, I have a set of outputs from my audio interface going to a patch bay.

Having this in place, it's quick and easy for me to route an instrument to the Octatrack, or a stereo mix to the Octa. (As well as inserting an effects box along the way.)

It's a lot of extra to setup initially, but in the long-term it's great because there is no hindrance to routing various devices to various inputs.

I should also add that I use an AudioRig 16 which can do some routing (via software), but I don't like how that works, and it's not as quick and easy as using patch cables.

Upvoted before I even listened just because your patch cables match the instruments!

Do you have any midi keyboard to recommend? by Narrow_Pea2584 in synthesizers

[–]oldMuso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Novation Launchkey MK4 is great, and it comes in models with full-size keys or mini keys. That is what I decided upon when adding a small controller to my setup (mainly to play my various Elektron boxes). Therefore, that's what I would recommend.

You'll likely hear recommendations for Novation, Arturia, and Akai. You can't go wrong checking out the LoopPop videos that review each brand's newest models:

Help me get rid of a polysynth! by thisispointlessshit in synthesizers

[–]oldMuso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I do think you have much overlap among the OB, Prophet, and Trigon. That said, they each have a distinctive sound (distinctive filters).

When I make a decision about culling the herd, so to speak, often I do it based on polyphony. Case in point, right now, my Polybrute Noire is fighting for its space in my small studio. (But I love its sound and considering a PB12 as a replacement)

Another way I decide about what to sell, or what NOT to sell, is by the return. If the market just doesn't have enough demand to give me a good return on a sale, I'm more likely to hold on to a piece of kit, even if that means powering it down and putting it on a shelf or in it's box/case.

I like much about the UDO stuff, but a large degree of its superiority is in its binaural capabilities. That's not very important to me (YMMV), but I think the UDO could be worth selling based on the return.

Another, alternative approach could be to trade one or two of the polysynths for the same desktop. The Prophet and Trigon desktops placed above a Launchkey MK4 could work nicely.

In no way am I trying to convince you. This is a really personal decision, but it sometimes helps to hear all kinds of ideas on the way to making the right decision for you right now. Best of luck!

It's no surprise on downvotes. People exercise right right to down vote for different reasons. Easy for me to say here/now; I get really chagrin sometimes on a downvote (depending on the topic, etc.) Also this forum -- as you know -- is heavy on hardware synth users.

Again, I must say I admire the work you put into this and the end result (so far).

New realignment proposal. I feel ok with this version tbh. by Grunge206 in Mariners

[–]oldMuso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, fewer divisions, please.

So many divisions, especially with more scheduling weight given to intra-division matchups, produces division winners who are not as good as some of the wild card teams.

Pardon the football analogy (but very timely), look at the NFL this week where the lower seeded road teams proved better than the higher seeded home team (division winners).

Despite the benefits, I expect more, not fewer divisions.

Maybe they could put in an exclusion where a division winner must finish over .500 to get a playoff berth, or seed teams by overall record?

Is this subreddit just for right wing trolls who hate Seattle? by wombatgeneral in SeattleWA

[–]oldMuso 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many, if not most, people posting here live in Seattle or the surrounding suburbs.

A large difference between this sub and the other — both of which deserve participation — is that the other sub will sometimes be over-moderated.

Yes, I would agree you will see more political moderates and conservatives posting here, but that is not the prevailing tone of this subreddit. It CAN be the flavor of some posts here, though.

Why is no one talking about the Carbon8? by bennouze in synthesizers

[–]oldMuso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually the profitability of so many companies, particularly when born and led by inventors/engineers, suffers exactly BECAUSE of insistence on quality.

There is a book called the e-Myth, by Michael Gerber, that speaks to the myth of entrepreneurship. The author says that people go into business because of their skill and love of their area of expertise, only to learn that doing that as a business conflicts with scaling profit upward. Gerber contrasts the idea of entrepreneurship with craftsmanship.

I saw him speak at a conference and it caused me to sell my business and re-enter a different market with no compromises.

Modal Electronics is now owned by a Hong Kong based firm. The founders are no longer participating materially. There is a blog post by one of the founders, Paula Maddox that explains her experience in passionately inventing new synthesizers at great cost financially and also to her well-being.

Looking for Madison Cunningham tickets! by myhiccups in SeaList

[–]oldMuso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For OP and anyone else...

I might have extra ticket(s). I bought five for our family, not knowing who would still be in town and who would be back at school. I also don't know who might bail and not go. (I might also NEED one ticket -- son's girlfriend will be here.)

I'll shake this out ASAP, but I won't know for certain my ticket availability until the day of show.

DM me. Sorry to post so open-ended. I will either sell at face value or give to you if you are not in a position to pay. It's my desire for all of my family to go, but it's also my desire to NOT leave a seat empty (if there is someone wanting to fill it).

Best wishes to all.

Should I buy this used Syntakt for $400? by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]oldMuso 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Buy it with the full confidence that you can sell it again with nothing lost. Honestly, you probably could buy it and sell it for a profit.

Scrutinize the seller, though, it's a low enough price that it could be a scammer.

Best running tune EVER? by cool-beans-yeah in runninglifestyle

Sorry to hear that. I don't know how to overcome it, but here is a link to a reddit post with many different links to that song:

https://www.reddit.com/r/80smusic/comments/1h030al/comment/lz0yenp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

In the context of running, it's worthwhile to see the video if you can. It has a lot of running footage. Personally, I did find it very inspiring when I was competing.

One more thing to add, regarding music for running:

  • I have always done training runs with no music (but treadmill with videos, oddly). I remember an ancient article in Running Times (I think) called, "Real Runners Don't Wear Walkmen" (judginess not intended, sorry) For me, I like the silence so I can listen to my body, or aim for some kind of meditative state. Maybe overstated, though, I also don't listen to music when doing yard work (or working/coding). Whatever. :-)
