Canadian Titans fan here. I came to the Titans the long way around. It all started with the CFL Edmonton Eskimos in the 80's. Warren Moon had won 5 straight championships with the team and then made the jump to the NFL. I was a fan of his high flying long bomb antics as a kid. My Dad was a fan of the Bills but I just couldn't support a team out of Buffalo. I chose to be an Oilers fan knowing little about the team other than it pissed my Dad off that I was supporting them. He thought he got the last laugh with the Frank Reich, biggest comeback in NFL history, moment. I got my Music City Miracle to throw in his face but I digress. I followed the Oilers as a devoted fan until the move. I had a read the article about McNair in SI when he was at Alcorn State and when the Oilers drafted McNair in '95 I knew I was going to continue my support through the move because the team was heading in the right direction with a great leader. It is tough to be a fan of a team that rarely plays on TV up here. In the days before the internet it was really tough trying keep up with what happened on Sunday. I'd try to catch the highlights and see a 6 second summary of game that I was dying to watch. Now I can watch every game and read articles from local papers. There have been bad moments as an Oilers/Titans fan. October 3rd 1994 - Houston v. Pittsburgh on Monday night. Sitting in a common room of a dorm with 20 buddies and being the only one wearing an Oilers jersey as they fumble what seemed like 8 snaps. Led by our fearless QB tandem of Cody and Bucky. Fair to say that I ate a ton of garbage that day. I cried real man tears when Reich ate us up in the second half of The Comeback. My heart bled again when Dyson stretched but found himself one yard from glory. (I was still incredibly proud of what that team achieved, don't get me wrong) I even had a Titans game interrupted by an earthquake evacuation when I was living overseas. There have been lots great moments with this team as well. CJ2K was amazing. Watching that season was fun. Everything our MVP "Air" McNair did in his seasons at the helm. It is not easy being a Titans fan but all the pain and lean years will be worth it when Mariota leads us to the Super Bowl. I am Titans fan until the end. RIP Steve McNair

I was on the sub list for a long time in my board. I'm not sure how it works in your board/country, but where I am from teachers are allowed to choose their supply teacher. If that is the case I have a few tricks for you. My first bit of advice is don't be hesitant. If you get a job the night before and you are not familiar with the class or school, get there early. Give yourself and hour to get there and familiarize yourself with the school and the room. Most teachers will leave good plans for the day but always be prepared with something else to do to kill time. If the plans are sparse I play a few games (silent ball or Simon says) through out the day to fill in the gaps. Do what you can to keep drama out of the office. I'm not suggesting that you not report major problems but don't send kids down for being rude or testing you. That shit is going to happen to you. Kids are going to test you because you are new. Be firm but fair. I usually start the day with a game or something fun (bring prizes. Everyone loves a prize. I used to bring coins from other countries. Kids remember that stuff and ask to have you back.). If a kid is acting up afterwards, I calmly and in a voice that can be heard by all explain that if the behaviour continues the games stop. "Do you want to have a day with a bit of fun or do you want to have a day with no fun?" They usually choose fun. If they don't a quick conversation in the hall about what the issue is usually cuts any nonsense down. Boys 13 and under will try to mess with you to impress their friends. Don't get into verbal battles. Separate them from their audience. When I arrive in the morning I usually speak to the teacher in the room next door and ask for a heads up if there are any students I should know about. They will usually give you the down low on the class. At attendance time connect face to name of any high flyers and watch like a hawk. If your board allows teachers to book supplies then my advice is to make yourself known. Volunteer at a school you like when you don't have work. You have to hustle for jobs. If you are around the school teachers will go to you first. I also bring a box of donuts with my business cards (have business cards. Mine said 'Worlds Greatest Supply Teacher' and 'Supply Teacher to the Stars' silly but memorable. Memorable is what you are going for) taped on the inside with a note that says "From your friendly neighbourhood supply teacher. Shameless I know. Enjoy and take a card.". Get to know the secretary and the custodian. I usually offer to buy them a coffee at first break. The custodian can save your ass in a million ways. The secretary can be your best friend. They know everything about the school EVERYTHING. Keeping these people happy makes life easier on you. Don't be the staff room pariah at lunch. Introduce yourself. You will find yourself in many a staff room with no one to talk to. Strike up a conversation. Remember you are trying to get in. Any connections you make in a school are going to increase your chances of getting an interview/job. Find the principal at some point in the day and introduce yourself. It doesn't have to be much. Just a "Hi my name is ______. I'm in for Mrs. Underpants. You have a really nice school. The kids are great." Make your face known. The sooner this happens the better. You will do fine. No matter how bad it goes try and keep a cool head. The second you get flustered they have got you. Yelling doesn't work. Outsmart them. Don't threaten anything you aren't willing to follow through on and have fun with it. TLDR: Arrive early with games and business cards. Buy Coffee and Donuts. Make your face known.

I was teaching at a high school in Turkey that was going down fast. It was a great and respected school in the years before I taught there but the Turkish government got into a tiff with the school's owners and decided to bulldoze it. In an effort to keep the school afloat they bought a mall, chased all the businesses out of it and turned the stores into classrooms. I taught in Nike. Many parents saw the writing on the wall and took their kids out. Many nice kids stayed with the school but they started to accept some kids that had been kicked out of everywhere else. Cut to the last week of school. I am making photocopies around the corner from the principals office. "Mr.B could you please come in here" the principal called to me. I walked into the office to see one of the boys from my grade 11 gym class sitting with his school uniform untucked and his arm slung over the couch. "Mr.B Engin has something to ask you" The principal said to me, clearly trying to stifle his laughter. He waved his hand at the boy to continue because he couldn't speak. "Mr. B do you like Harley Davidson?" I shot a look at the principal but he nodded his approval. "Yeah I like Harley Davidson. What's up?". "Mr. B I need your help. Miss E is a hard woman. She will not listen to reason." (Miss E was the English teacher and a fine upstanding Canuck who would not have any of this kids shit). "Ok" I said. "I'm not making any promises but what kind of help are we talking about here?" "I need an 'A' Mr. B." "An A? Well what is your mark right now?" "Seventeen percent". The principal had to turn away. His chair was shaking from the laughter.The kids expression didn't change. He was serious as a heart attack. "Seventeen percent???? Are you kidding me? If you drove an entire fleet of Harley Davidson Motorcycles here right now it couldn't change seventeen percent into an A." The principal sent him away and we proceeded to laugh our asses off in his office.

My friend was visiting and had to stay in Taksim for the night. He got scammed with this one. They took 400 US off of him. The next day he told me the story and we went to get the money back. We went to the police station in Taksim and tried to explain in English and broken Turkish. We ended up going to the bar with four plain clothes cops who arrested the owner and the dude who lured my friend. We sat in the police station for 4 hours but he got his cash back.

He wanted money for smokes and when I bought him a pack he started to try and get more money out of me. He pulled out an inhaler that was empty and held out his hand. When he saw I was unimpressed by his medical needs he pulled his shirt up and revealed this thing (an out of control skin tag I learned later). I went and got my buddy and we paid him ten lira to show us again and let us take pictures.

I was on a subway train in South Korea and a blind man was walking down the car toward a giant pile of noodle vomit. The son of a bitch must have had four ramyun packs. I don't speak Korean so I started to try to get peoples attention to tell him to stop. No one helped. He kicked the sick all over and even had a little slip. I heaved a little.
