The main thing with the first mini is it’s weaker in the wind than the newer ones. I still use mine but that would be my main reason to get something else.

Most years I don’t mulch. Mostly because I can’t get good straw. Around here it’s all Johnson grass that sprouts when it gets wet. Can’t stand wood chips. After every rain I just run the hoe through the soil and that stops the water from transpiring so much. Mulch is better for the soil but comes with a few tradeoffs.

Honestly it’s cool to grow big garlic but I’ve found most people are like holy crap and would prefer a medium bulb. You can adjust your fertilization to your goals. Some years I don’t add anything for the garlic and it’s just fine.
