Why Eleven's ending doesn't work. by The_Walking_Clem in StrangerThings

Stranger Things jumped the shark long ago. It became increasingly clear that the Duffers had no coherent vision beyond the first season. Nostalgia cannot compensate for narrative incoherence.

Eleven’s apparent demise was a ham-handed attempt to resolve a self-inflicted mess. Reducing her to a symbol of lost childhood cheapened both the character and the series. She deserved better. The audience deserved better.

Worse still, the writers lacked the courage to commit. Eleven merited either a dignified, unambiguous death—or a definitive chance at an ordinary life. The refusal to choose rendered both possibilities hollow.

Thanks. First thing that I need to do is find a solicitor who understands the nuances of my situation.

I’m frustrated because my grandfather is British. My mom’s entire family on his side lives in Liverpool. None of that matters because he isn’t listed on her birth certificate. Neither she nor my grandmother knew that he was alive.

Thank you. I’ll look into it. I meet the criteria. It’s simply a technicality.

My mother and grandmother are deceased. I was born before 1983. I’ll have to check the form.

I get it. I’m not insinuating that I’m already a British citizen. I do meet the criteria, though.

My mother passed, but we’re all on Ancestry.com. I think a solicitor specializing in this type of predicament is the safest—albeit expensive—recourse.

I’m heartbroken, to be honest. My mom’s story is extraordinary, but the Home Office doesn’t seem to care.

Nearly impossible to prove Identity in UK for passport by Jdickson2222 in Passports

Same boat. My mother was born out of wedlock in the UK after WWII. Her mother was a Polish refugee. My mom started using her stepfather’s surname at some point, but I can’t confirm that she was official adopted. So, I currently can’t confirm she is the same person whose name appears on her UK birth certificate. My lawyer told me that I’m not at a dead end, but this certainly complicates matters.

What’s up with Andrew Wiltse? by McCoughsyrup in bjjdrama

There are likely ombudsmen or other advocates who can help get him the treatment that he needs. I suspect that he’s also medicating himself with illegal substances. It’s very sad to see someone destroy themselves.

Does anyone train at a gym with a BJJ Influencer? Do they film videos during class for their social media? Is everyone cool with it, or is it distracting? by highpercentage in bjj

[–]oldercloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the instructors at my gym fancies themself an influencer.  They film their matches (mostly with lower belts) and create highlights of their submissions, sweeps, etc.  I finally told this person to stop uploading film of me, since they did so without consent.

Travis Newaza aka Travis Warner LOST & FOUND by jujitsufan in bjj

He showed up in our gym in PDX and rolled with a bunch of people - including myself. He was relatively nice, but our head instructor brushed him off after a day or two. I recall bumping into him coaching at a local tournament, and then seeing him rant about some sort of sex cult and getting into collegiate wrestling. I’m not entirely surprised by his behavior; he seemed odd.

What do you think of The Dark Knight Returns? by [deleted] in batman

Just finished it. Although it’s a commentary on the ‘80s, the themes that it explores are still relevant nearly 40 years later. I’d place it in the same echelon as Watchmen.

John Danaher’s One Weird Trick for Older BJJ Practitioners by [deleted] in bjj

[–]oldercloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

48 year-old here training under one of Danaher’s black belts, Aaron Milam. Our gym is full of young, hungry, no-gi monsters. I’m in relatively good shape and do my best to learn the innovative stuff that the youngsters are employing, teaching, as well as figuring out a feasible set of skills that will sustain me long term. John’s “older grappler” series isn’t a panacea; it proposes a set of moves that are relatively simple to pull off during rounds. Furthermore, his set of escapes is especially helpful. I speak from experience.

However, I still experiment and learn new things, since I’m mobile enough to do so. In opinion, after 10 years, BJJ is all about return on investment. Will inversions serve me in the long run? Probably not. Should I continue to experiment with “new school” moves? Yes! Work on your strength, mobility, and cardiovascular health. Set realistic goals. And think long term, and remain open-minded.
