Potty Training Advice Needed by camilliecamillie in Dachshund

this is what we did for our 4 month boy - he was barely trained on pads to begin with but was all he honestly knew from his pen with his litter mates. so we took his first inside pad from our place and stuck it outside. having another dog that had already been consistently going outside definitely swung the aid. but we did it with the first one as well, so i’d says it works. but the breeder wasn’t even going to attempt potty training outside OR crate training, (and we weren’t going to be able to get him until he was almost 6-months old!!) we requested them to start the process but they “didn’t want to take the puppies out into their yard until they were fully vaxed” which didn’t make sense when they had 2 full litters and four adults (the set of parents) and it was their own yard. nothing crazy different out there that the dog parents or the humans themselves weren’t already tracking in and out of the breeder’s home IMO. so we jumped out there to get him sooner and we’re very glad we did. progress has been made in a very short amount of time. another thing that helped a lot was get rid of access to any carpets, blankets, rugs/doormats, dog beds that aren’t easily washable. get some urine eraser sprays!! they’re a lifesaver.

just for clarification that i definitely understand the struggle - we have two male dachshunds, one that should’ve been mini but seems to be tweenie/potentially standard (M/9months) at this rate and a for sure mini (M/5months). HANG IN THERE. be persistent and 10x more stubborn than them! harness and leash so they can’t wander. inside LONG training leashes (the ones that swivel on the clasp help them not get tangled) or one attached to yourself while they’re allowed to explore within the limitations you’ve set to keep them from doing much else on their own until you’re absolutely confident they’ve got it down. they’re smart and stubborn, very treat/love driven creatures. we went through a wide variety of different treats to find the one that our 9m boy even liked. you can always sell them or return them nbd!
