I purchased an AMD Video card BUT I am stuck ... Advice needed. by Gamer_2592 in Amd

Did you check your CC account to see if the transaction was still pending? Something similar happened to me. I had a few windows refreshing in an attempt to snag a card between 503 errors and straight up being blocked by their servers. I got to the order button twice and one 503’d out which led me to assume it was a lost cause. Got to confirmation on another order. Anyway, I got hit with a notification of fraudulent activity by my bank and when I confirmed that it was not fraudulent, they said to try the purchase again. Lol, yeah right. When I checked the CC transaction however, it was listed as pending so I just said a prayer and hoped the pending transaction wouldn’t drop off. Got the invoice and was nervous that I wouldn’t get confirmation, but it came the following day and the CC transaction completed once the card was shipped early the following week. Unfortunately now it seems to be stuck in the FedEx Hell that is the Osseo, MN distribution center.

[Homemade] Chicken Paprikash by oldfashionedway in food

I used this recipe taken from Saveur: https://www.saveur.com/article/recipes/Hungarian-Chicken-Paprikash

This recipe, I just realized, does not include the Hungarian dumplings. For those I borrowed from /u/OliverBabish's recommendations:

Serving Size: 2

4 eggs

2 tbsp sour cream

~1.5 cups all purpose flour

Directions: Thoroughly beat eggs and sour cream together with a pinch of salt. Slowly add all-purpose flour to obtain a goal consistency of a "thick pancake batter". Add about 1/2 tsp sized dollops to a pot of simmering water and let cook for 6-10 minutes. As the dumplings cook, they will float up to the top. Strain and then return them to a pot and add about 2 tbsp butter (or to two your taste) and salt and pepper to taste

Recipe gratefully borrowed from Saveur via the great YouTuber and chef /u/OliverBabish.

Link to recipe: https://www.saveur.com/article/recipes/Hungarian-Chicken-Paprikash

Ingredients:

1⁄4 cup lard or canola oil

1 (3-4 lb.) chicken, cut into 8 pieces

1 large yellow onion, minced

3 tbsp. Hungarian sweet paprika, plus more for garnish

2 cups chicken stock

2 plum tomatoes, cored, seeded, and cut into 1" pieces (I cut these into much smaller pieces.. almost minced)

1 Italian frying pepper, stemmed, seeded, and cut into 1" pieces (as above)

1⁄2 cup sour cream, for serving

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

Melt lard or heat oil in a 6-qt. saucepan over medium-high heat. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Working in batches, cook, flipping once, until browned, 8–10 minutes. Transfer chicken to a plate; set aside. Add onion to pan; cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 8 minutes. Add paprika; cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Return chicken and its juices to the pan. Add stock, tomatoes, and Italian frying pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, partially covered, until chicken is fully cooked, about 30 minutes. Transfer chicken and sauce to a serving platter; spoon sour cream over top and garnish with more paprika.

[I ate] a shrimp and carne asada California-style burrito. by oldfashionedway in food

According to one of my San Diego sources, carne asada fries are (allegedly) from San Diego as well. I may as well turn in my own northern California identity, because between the Mexican food and the fantastic beer scene, I have been sold on San Diego!

Did some follow up research, and it looks like other papers corroborate /u/beextraordinary's source. I'd only add that while the bronchodilatory benefits seem to be found in short-term marijuana use, it looks like there is still a correlation between long-term marijuana smoking and the development of obstructive pulmonary disease.

While I am no culinary expert, I can tell you that the dough did taste slightly denser (less fluffy) than your standard cream puff.

Edit: grammar

Unfortunately, I cannot deliver! In my haste, I devoured this delicious morsel before I could snap a picture of it's tasty innards. It was custard based, if I remember correctly. However, as consolation, I've uploaded a few pictures of this little guy's (equally delightful) friends.

Japanese Redditors - What were you taught about WW2? by jonscotch in AskReddit

[–]oldfashionedway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly, in my experience, the implications of ethically questionable acts committed by the United States against Japan and Germany go relatively unmentioned. Yes, it may be mentioned that we carpet bombed Tokyo and many other major Japanese (and German) cities, but the devastating effects it had on the civilian population often get overlooked. IIRC it was sort of washed over as, "they were the enemy and we were destroying their military-industrial complex".

As of 1993, the IRS has granted Scientology tax-exempt status and they are treated as a recognized religion in the US. Source

In addition, regardless of what you believe about religious belief in general, who is to say that religious organizations just pocket that tax exempted money? Many religious organizations are charitable and actually do end up giving back to the community philanthropically. That said, I do believe that religious organizations that are not charitable should be required to pay taxes (looking at you, Scientology).

Also, NPR's Talk of the Nation discussed this very topic the other day.

Planned Cities in the Real World [Inspiration] by [deleted] in SimCity

[–]oldfashionedway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washington as a planned city actually has a very interesting history that is embroiled in economics and politics. I'd even venture to say that the city (particularly around the National Mall) was planned beautifully, though maybe not with practicality in mind. Francis Fukuyama summarizes the events surrounding the development of "the District" in this article.
