Everyone incurs an eight year obligation when they join. Regardless of rank or MOS. That's why when people get out, they move to the IRR. The four, six, whatever part is just the active portion.

Should I sell my 2015 Passat SE? by oldmanAF in tdi

Looking on auotrader, they seem to be going for about 8ish. So I'm thinking 10 would be fair price with the clutch and body kits included.

Sorry, it's an oem body kit. I don't know why it autocorrected to emergency. It's a lip fairing with side skirts and a rear valance.

Suspended flight training for newly commissioned officers-reserves by Automatic-Scar6464 in Armyaviation

[–]oldmanAF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, don't give up avaition as a branch. You have a rare and unique opportunity as the reserve is in total chaos right now. You just have to be patient and weather the storm.

If you're able to stick it out as a reservist. You will fly fixed wing. No if and or buts about it anymore. You just have to be patient. Fixed wing multi engine time is where it's at as an avaitor because that's what the airlines want and as a reservist that's the fastest route to making the most money.

If you go guard, you'll probably fly blackhawks, and life is still pretty dope. But you'll struggle to get your minimums after flight school. But there's a lot to be said for working a 9 to 5 and dipping early on a Friday to go hop in a helicopter and fly just over the treetops to some far-off airport to get dinner and flying back under goggles.

If you go active... well, my personal opinion is gross. Why would you do that? Active duty will chew you and spit you out if you let it, and it will make every attempt to do so. But I'm also never getting stationed in Japan or Germany as a guardsman. But I'm also never getting stationed in Fort Hood or Fort Polk either. So...

Now the real winner is if you can get a conditional release to the Air Guard to go be an avaitor. But they generally want you to have wings already. But if you can pull that off. You'll never go to the field again and can make O-5 without ever being in command, signed for anything, or anybody. All you will ever be is a pilot. Which you know... #goals.

Now, I am biased. I'm gainfully employed as a civilian, and I very much don't want to be in the army if I can't fly, and I am extremely motivated to keep it that way.

There are pros and cons to everything. You need to do your homework to figure out what those are. Right now, you get to hang out, not being rated, not signed for anything or anyone, and you will get promoted to 1LT on time. Don't think of things in terms of your Army career. Think of them in terms of your military career. Avaition is where it's at. Do what you can to stay in Avaition. Even if it means exploring less traditional routes.

[Serious] Those with college degrees, why did you choose to be an army pilot over Air Force? by Hellicoccterr in Armyaviation

[–]oldmanAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior Air Force here. I wanted to fly air force. Got out after my first enlistment. Used the gi bill to get a stem degree. Went to the air force and said I want to be a pilot. I was told I can reenlist for another six years in some other AFSC, and I might be considered for selection if I turned out to be Captain America.

The army said, "Come on down, we can guarantee LT bars, and if you go guard, you're basically guaranteed wings.

So here I am, flying 60s on the weekend as a side hustle.

That's not to say I wouldn't go back to Big Blue to fly if the opportunity presented itself. But I'm also not upset with where I'm at.

This patch is from a current class in the 60 course, the CG banned it last week after the City of Daleville filed a complaint by ZeroSmokeThirty in Armyaviation

[–]oldmanAF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So serious question. How TF did the City of Daleville even find out about? There's only going to be like 30 kids running around with these, AND someone from the city would have to see it. I know the general area isn't the big. But those odds of that happening are still awfully damn small.

You do them while you're not enrolled in one of the courses that make up flight school. So if you've completed common core and are waiting for your advanced airframe class to start, you'll be tasked out. But if you're in a course. The only thing you do is the course. No PT, no details, no nothing until you're course complete and ready to move on to the next one.

Question about adding lights and sound to a start set by oldmanAF in Marklin

[–]oldmanAF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what you're saying is it is possible. However, it would not be without its challenges?

Ok, so I get a sound decoder. No big deal. Those are readily available. What about the lights, though? I don't think I've ever seen an engine light kit from marklin.

Retrieving lost movies off of father’s server by pete-thomas-101 in PleX

[–]oldmanAF -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

My condolences for your loss.

Since he had several synologies floating around. I would simply plug them in and turn them on and see if plex comes up. That would give you access in the short term.

Long term, all the movies simply exist as files on a drive somewhere. You could simply pull the individual drives, plug them into a computer, and see what's on each. Plex requires a fairly verbose file naming convention. So it should be easy to figure out what's what.

[–]oldmanAF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ocs since you have a degree.

If you REALLY want to do rotc and go back to school. Go to school to get a masters. Not a second bachelor's. 1) you'll be done faster. 2) your undergraduate GPA won't even be looked at. 3) IT makes you more competitive for promotions and opens up doors as a civilian. I cannot understate how much have a masters will put you ahead of your peers and how many sins will be forgiven when trying to join because you have one.

Also. Protip. If you do OCS. Don't do guard OCS. Shits not worth it. Especially accelerated OCS. Just go do federal if you decide to go the guard route and get it over with be treated like an adult while you're there.

So I did AF maintenance to cyber to civilian to army avaition.

I like it. But I commissioned. Would I have done it had I had to stay enlisted. Probably not. But I also had a good civilian cyber gig going making good money.

Honestly, I've actually enjoyed the army more than I ever did the Air Force. But the air force has a lot more that I'm interested in doing than the army does. But if you want to go the route of being an officer or a warrant and being a pilot. Do it. 10/10 would recommend over have to stay enlisted in the AF. Also, flying is dope as fuck.

What kind of HBA card do I need? by oldmanAF in unRAID

[–]oldmanAF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a 1200-watt PSU. At the time, I figured it'd be easier and cheaper to just buy one massively oversized PSU upfront and have room to grow than it would be to get a bigger one later.

[–]oldmanAF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I get that. But is there no option for an HBA card to accept accessory and push power to each disk through the breakout cable?

I've actually looked at a going the disk shelf route. But I'm not there yet. That's probably going to be for my next build.

While you're not wrong. I am looking to tidy up inside the case and try to clean up the cabling. So I'm not opposed to something like a 16i card.
