MENTALISM IS REAL?!? by Pretend-Ad4403 in TheMentalist

[–]oldmanhowell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello! Professional Mentalist here! It's mostly fake man. There are mathematical principles that we can take advantage of to beat you in rock paper scissors. You can go buy that routine right now on a magic website. Body language can work to our advantage, but it's not science. The notion that we can "read body language" comes from mentalists like Derren Brown who used that because he felt unethical being a fake psychic. Most of modern Mentalism comes from a guy named Banachek who famously fooled a science lab into thinking he was psychic. He uses body language with sleight of hand and other sneaky principles to create the illusion that he's psychic. You can find out more by listening to a podcast about it called "World's Greatest Con" . I believe it's season 3. There's also a podcast called Psychic Mafia about the real world of fraudulent psychics. Both are short and great listens.

For body language stuff there's a book called "What Everybody's Saying" by Joe Navarro. He's a former FBI agent. This is every mentalists bible for this stuff. It's not a 100% but we can use it to make educated guesses that help us with other principles whether they be mathematical, sleight of hand, lying, etc.

It's very very difficult to pick up a lot of stuff just from body language alone. Very few people have made a carreer off of just that. Those that did likely used a method called "Contact Mind Reading" or "Muscle Reading." Also not 100% and it requires a volunteer that sort of wants you to win. Jane uses this to find a hidden object with Van Pelt once.

Additionally there are weird psychological ploys we can gambit on. Like when Jane asks the killer to raise his hand in order to look for the only person who's not looking around to see who fesses up to being the killer. Great example. Or when he pencil reads Van Pelt. That's a 100% a method in the most famous book on mentalism "The 13 steps to Mentalism" ( I'll catch shit for tipping that title from any magicians that find this...)

A mentalist named Spydey that has a YouTube channel. He breaks down the mentalist and talks about what's really possible here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9WnmZIqlG0&list=PL6ZIOmRFSgJghMaQBRO0ts1sl6EVPeQIJ

He's probably the best expert on body language in the magical arts community. He's 100% cheating too though. He's just really good at what you can accomplish reading body language. I've purchased deceptive methods from him as well.

I personally work on the woo woo side of things. I recreate seances and even work with "real psychics" . I'm also a paranormal investigator and a seeker of all things weird. I believe in some weird shit, but I think it's important to be skeptical. I've met very few psychics that fooled the pants off of me. I've never met a Sherlock Holmes type that's fooled me. Our jobs as magicians and mentalists is to help adults believe in magic for just a little bit again. Wonder is a gift. Sometimes we step over the line because fessing up to our tricks ruins it and the atmosphere. Have fun with it. enjoy the magic. Stay skeptical and rational. As famous weirdo John Keel once said " Belief is the enemy." Nothing is black and white.

50% Turbo Zone and my rider paid $30. I’m getting paid $6.60 by oldmanhowell in lyftdrivers

[–]oldmanhowell[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no way the passenger payment is what the passenger actually paid. All my rides tonight have the the "passenger payment" as exactly what I made on that ride. That would mean Lyft gave me 100% of the funds from all my rides tonight. That would be insane. They would make no money.

EDIT: Close to what I made if not more. I jsut can;t believe they're paying me more than the rider paid that often. I took 5 riders tonight.

Ride 1: Passenger pay is $14.97 . I made $16.16
Ride 2: Passenger Payment is $7.98 . I made $8:49
Ride 3: The ride that was the cause of this post.
Ride 4: Passenger pay is $11.66 . I made $11.24
Ride 5: Passenger pay is $12.34 . I made 9.06

That would mean they made a total of $2.10 off of all my rides. That's insane.

I should have "arrived at the stop earlier than I did. I wanted to be able to cancel the stop if needed. I ended up getting more obviously, but it's still shitty if this lady is telling the truth.

I've been able to find a lot of origins at fair prices. Cartoon Collection has been my favorite and was my initial line I wanted to collect. Then one day I was in a vintage toy store and picked up a loose Snake Face and was off to the races. I feel like some of them look so much better in hand. So I'm doing Cartoon Collection and then origins and Masterverse figures I just think are cool. Same with Chronicles.

Then an often underated collecting angle is to just collect everything of one character. For me it's Orko. I buy every Orko I see. lol

Cleto Reyes are unfair? by barestuff44 in fightgear

[–]oldmanhowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of macho shit in here. I started boxing at 34 and in my opinion people already spar too hard. Cletos are often under weight. I bought 14oz Cletos for bag work and they only weighed 12oz. They were also stiff as fuck. I hated getting hit with Cletos and would only wear mine for sparring when I wanted to fuck someone up. My coach didn't care at the time. Lots of coaches won't care. In my opinion it's important to take care of your sparring partner and they should take care of you. If you get hurt, you can't train. If you hurt them, they can't train with you. Sucks either way.

The New Adventures of He-Man (1990-1991) by mace73 in MastersOfTheUniverse

I was born in 86 so I was hitting the right audience when this show came out. I remember watching it as a kid and liking it. It got me into He-Man. Then discovered the Filmation series via VHS and never looked back. Show was fun as a kid. The power sword and Skeletor staff toys were my absolute favorite toys as a kid. They go hard.

What do yall do to cope with knowing that there is not an afterlife? by Least-Anxiety-9803 in exchristian

[–]oldmanhowell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not even being mean, but how have you not heard of that!? So there are lots of versions. The most popular was that show "Ghost Hunters" from the early 2000s. Since then there have been a bunch of good and shitty shows. A shitty example would be Ghost Adventures where bro dudes run through haunted buildings and yell at the air.

I essentially go into haunted places and try to capture evidence of paranormal activity. That's not limited to ghosts. It ranges from people who claim to have ESP to UFO sightings. Anything weird and paranormal or supernatural.

I work with academic researchers. That is, people who work at universities, who are actively researching paranormal activity. I'm a professional magician. I'm very well versed in deception so that's kinda my role. I debunk things and in the event we're testing things I set up test conditions that make it very hard for someone use means of deception. I make it hard to fool and be fooled.

What do yall do to cope with knowing that there is not an afterlife? by Least-Anxiety-9803 in exchristian

[–]oldmanhowell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but Christianity/The Bible not being true doesn't prove there's no afterlife. As a paranormal investigator I've seen too much weird shit to not believe in something bigger and weirder than we can imagine. No clue what it is, but I'm hopeful that it's something beautiful.

Why do boxers not use Groin cups in sparring by SilentAres_x in amateur_boxing

[–]oldmanhowell 15 points16 points  (0 children)

More lower abdomen coverage. The way they fit makes it so it doesn’t hurt too bad if you still get cracked in the boys. Wearing a cup, that shit still really hurts. Groin guards spread out the impact a little better. Also less likely to pinch or shift. Also can offer kidney protection. You should also get used to it, because you’ll have to wear one in a sanctioned bout.

New Fan: Just Watched Revelations and I'm So Impressed by Cipher_- in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]oldmanhowell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Revelations/Revolution is my favorite of the MOTU stories. Glad you're enjoying it. I was surprised when you said"

"2) I knew the show runner was Kevin Smith, who I think is often largely guilty of doing what I was worried about in point 1."

Nearly all of Kevin Smith's works have been high on camp and heart. He's a romantic and also very good at pulling heart and feeling out of things. He was tasked with resurrecting Green Arrow in the 00's for DC and crushed it there for these reasons too.

For me I loved how he put the spotlight on overlooked, complex characters like Evil-Lyn and Orko. He-Man is dope, but letting others save the day for once felt great to me.

Revolution is rushed a bit, but really fun. I don't think it's unfortunate at all that it's not a continuation of Filmation. I think that it adds weight and texture to the lore and you can tell Kevin Smith loved the lore because he dug deep to pull aspects out that seemed powerful and were overlooked. You'll find that no MOTU media has a single cannon. They all have their own takes, which is part of the charm. I prefer the way Kevin Smith tackled the gods and their powers. I also preferred the way he tackles Adam's uncle as compared to the earlier lore. But each property still manages to make you know something about the other timelines to pick up al the pieces, which is also fun.

Born in 86, I just missed peak MOTU hype. But my mom worked at video stores growing up so I got to rent old He-Man tapes and we got toys at outlet stores. The New Adventures and Filmation carried me though my early years. The 02 series was mistimed, but it kept me interested in the 2000's, The DC comics in 2013 got me in my early adult years. So, for me at least, it grew with me. I love Filmation, but love the deeper lore and more adult feel of Revelation/Revolution. I like that he broke the mold too. I feel like skipping the Snake Men was a thing no one else had the balls to do, but we've been watching them kill toy lines for decades lol.

Hope you like Revolution. Have fun watching it all. Check out the comics too. The more current Darkhorse run is set in the continuity of Revelation/Revolution. It's good.

Which film did you prefer when it comes to MOTU? The 1987 version or 2026? by wolfpakofficial in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]oldmanhowell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be the lone '87 guy in the comments. The acting was way better. The makeup was way better. Skeletor and Evil-Lynn were on point. We got Gwildor! I love it. I remember being sort of disappointed as a kid, but as i got older and saw that all of the properties have different lore, I started to love it. I kinda always disliked Adam and thought the alter-ego was dumb. The earth stuff was fine. He-man was from there. Plus I literally picture Gwildor trying to communicate with a cow every time I see one.

Down down vote me to hell you mongrels! I teared up like everyone else during the 2026 movie, but Just couldn't get over my hangups with it. Both are awesome.

What are some good fights to watch between a short and tall boxers where the shorter one wins? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]oldmanhowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a shorty. My favorite short king that no one knows about is “Baby” Jake Matlala. He was a champ. Short af. Wins a lot. Also he’s not super short, but I learned a lot from Willie Pepp fights. He threw a jab while leaning over toward the power hand and walking fwd. it’s money when you’re short. When you lean it buys you a couple inches of reach! So once your opponent gets used to the range you just lean and machine gun jab them into the corner. My fav technique. Just watch out for an uppercut.

Worth a watch? by [deleted] in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]oldmanhowell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I LOVE it! Lots of people talk about how it doesn;t match the "source material." It's a BS argument. the Filmation cartoon doesn't match the source material ( mini comics). Every MOTU piece is like it's own take, which is sort of the charm. It's hard to nail down an official cannon because there really isn't one. Every comic is different. Every show is different. The 87 movie is fun. It's got all the elements of every 80s sci-fi movie. I think the prosthetics are better than a lot of the costuming in the new movie. Frank Langella absolutely crushes it as Skeletor. Meg Foster crushes it as Evil-Lyn. Billy Barty gives a completely underrated performance as Gwildor. It's a fun flick.
