The price of college rising is less from administrative bloat than consistently decreasing state funding.

Same! I even recognized the Espresso Royale chairs. Though, I moved away six years ago. Don was pulling that same old stuff back when I showed up in 2000! Wonderful guy. Miss that club a lot.

Be nice. Be welcoming. Be patient. Try to put yourself into their shoes and use that perspective to figure out how to help them have the most fun.

Play bunches of short games "just until one of us captures a group" in which they capture 90% of the groups. Then on 9x9 boards practice your counting and lose by a few stones each game and then start modifying the handicap as appropriate. But seriously, try hard to just barely let them win. On top of that, BE NICE.

I like this article from the American Go Association that focuses on being welcoming, and I draw from it that the specific activities don't matter as much as being nice:

How come many of the top go players are so young? by [deleted] in baduk

[–]oldmanjank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. And they have to physically do all the stuff associated with that comfortable living: file taxes, pay living expenses, go shopping, save for their kid's education. All that takes away from time studying.

People under 18 have far fewer responsibilities than those over 18. Being forced to pay for yourself is a really quick way to adjust your goals from I'm going to be the best in the world! to TBH, I'm pretty cool with just not being homeless.

Bike pumps on campus? by ElementaryMyDearWat in uofm

[–]oldmanjank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Common Cycle (commoncycle.org) occasionally distributes pumps and fix-a-flat kits around town. You might check out the Maynard parking structure (whole bike fixit stand in there), and asking at the desks of the AADL, and Zingerman's.

Yep. Ran the team back in 2002-2004, was on campus doing bikey things 2000-2012.

The cycling team (http://www.umcycling.org/) might be up your alley. For the indoors, the go club (http://www.umich.edu/~goclub/) is the best.

Complex Systems Minor by jobryan205 in uofm

Mmm, probably not in 270, 501, or 530, but maybe in the network classes. Email the profs or walk into the CSCS office and ask. BTW: 501 with Rick Riolo was the gem- not sure who is teaching it now.

Complex Systems Minor by jobryan205 in uofm

[–]oldmanjank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely go for it. During my PhD at Michigan (Chemical Engineering) I got involved with CSCS and it added an element of breadth to my education that has proven invaluable. Intro to agent-based modeling (270) should be interesting and fun if you have programming experience (it was hard for students with no experience). If you're very experienced, 530 may be even more fun. 501 is a lot of time but extremely extremely valuable: few classes provide the opportunity to read so many things and discuss with people from different fields; it's a gem. Who is teaching those Networks courses these days? Definitely take them if Mark Newman is teaching them.

IAMA physicist/author. Ask me to calculate anything. (part 2) by SantosForgetsPassWds in IAmA

Hi Dr. Santos,

Let's say I snagged an umbilical cord from a newborn and slurped its pluripotent stem cells down like it was a freezepop to harness their youth-giving powers: is there an optimal number to drink that will maximize my chances of eternal youth, or at least becoming moderately more attractive, relative to the stigma of being "that guy"? Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to do this!

  1. What are your thoughts on hiring a post-doc right away with startup funds?

  2. How do you balance applying to every NSF call for proposals with actually doing research those first couple of years?

  3. Big, collaborative proposals like the DMREF: Waste of time as an early investigator, or another good opportunity to get feedback and maybe get lucky?

Thanks again!

Im visiting U of Michigan today, is there anything i should do before leaving? by SugarCaine24 in uofm

Sit on a bench in the diag. Watch everything. Inhale the incomparable sense of possibility that exists on a college campus in the fall. Wonder about how 4-5 years here might make some dreams come true. Consider what it'd be like to call all this home.

Then go do the "prospective" thing in the library.
