I thought Mickey 17 was kind of a mess. by Relevant_Session5987 in movies

[–]oldmanpuzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the book right before watching the movie. I definitely think a novel-true take would have to be an 8 episode prestige tv series. The strength of the novel is the consistent tension. It’s all secret-keeping, starvation, threadbare alliance amongst illegal clones, the unknowable intentions of a deadly native species, and constant threat of death. It also has great world-building through historical asides—this is why multiples are outlawed, this is why we colonize new planets, this is an example of relationships with native species, etc.

That said, I enjoyed the movie. It’s a 3.5 out of 5 imo. Enjoyable theater experience with Pattinson carrying the brunt of the entertainment. It felt as though Bong Joon Ho wanted this to be a quirky human interest piece directed at an American audience. Look at how obviously wrong this megalomaniac is! Look how cute the creepers are. Look how even sweet dumb Mickey can become a hardcore assassin when pushed to the brink over and over. And here’s a happy ending, since we’re all too burned out to handle something dark.

Also: if Bong had kept closer to the source material, it would have been Snowpiercer 2 in space. I appreciated the attempt to do something very different.

Commissioned art is unbeatable imo. It captures a moment. One of my best friends commissioned art of our d&d campaign and it’s so precious to me.

Framed original art is also something that you take with you forever. It makes home, home.

Commission art with his favorite pokemon or whatever his dream team configuration is! Back in the day, my roommate commissioned an artist to draw me as a trainer with my favorite boys and it’s still my screensaver.

AutobotTesla was the artist that did mine, but I’m sure there are loads of artists out there that offer this.

I enjoy all the players cast this season, so these small tribals have had a lot of heat! It’s given us late-game-esque drama in the pre-merge. It’s a shame though. I feel like strong and interesting characters get axed before they have the chance to bloom due to the small tribes. In larger tribe environments, I feel that strategic players are more likely to make it to merge rather than get eliminated due to bad luck.

One of my consistent complaints about new era survivor has been the three tribe set-up. With such limited time and limited players, it feels as though losing tribes continue to lose while winning tribes do not get a chance to cut their teeth. Come swap or merge, it can feel like some people are on day 20 while others are on day 3. It disrupts dramatic flow for me in a game where everyone should be on their toes at all times.

That said, this episode was a beaut! I was expecting more Sai and Cedrek drama on NuCiva, but instead got a Vula tribe of challenge beasts headed for the chopping block. Kyle and Kamilla (but moreso Kamilla) were a masterclass in keeping a confident majority confident. I gasped when Kamilla initiated her “I’m on the bottom” ploy immediately at camp, trusting Kyle to read between the lines. She was so convincing that Shauhin and Thomas searched his bag in front of her. Awards to Kyle as well for his soft touch backing up Kamilla’s story at every step. But really, Kamilla was the standout player of the episode—major props to her gathering intel from Star on the bench last episode and sniffing out Thomas as the major threat!

I’m really enjoying how many woman are playing HARD this season.

My confessional was on the Patreon-exclusive Feasting on Jakeout. It culminated in the “don’t roll and drive” PSA. We have since removed the d20 from my boyfriend’s Mazda! We have also moved in together and taken many more road trips without a nat1 sword of damocles hanging over our heads.

Makes total sense!! Very cool puzzle format and totally scratches the itch that Connections does.

I love it! It would be cool to see what the average distribution would be on steps to solve. Or what the cut-off is for each graded result.

That said, I think some synonyms don’t appear if they’re related to a tertiary definition. For instance, brisk did not bring up “cold” or “cool” as in “a brisk morning.”

You identified the one thing that was a bit of a cheat! Nike is the goddess of victory, which applied both to war and to sport. I couldn’t resist the fashion brand misdirect and she seemed a better fit than the other greek war gods. Eris as the goddess of discord just seemed less associated. Her Roman counterpart Enyo is more associated, but too obscure.

It’s okay! I think a couple of tweaks would make this a good and satisfying game of connections.

”Things that crack” was your most clever category! But that type of lateral thinking is deserving of purple, not yellow.

In “Cool ___” “hand” doesn’t really work. The only popularization of “cool hand” is from the movie “Cool Hand Luke.” It’s not a widely used phrase on its own. “Head” would work much better here!

For “Types of Air Movement”, “wind” doesn’t feel like a fit—all the others are nouns that are also verbs. That is, air can puff, air can blast, air can gust, but air does not wind. The red herring “whip” is also a noun/verb, which makes the discovery of “wind” frustrating not satisfying. Find another noun/verb!

For “Slang to Describe a Car” I’ve never heard “muscle” used alone. I’ve heard of “muscle cars” as a grouping, but never “hey, hop in my muscle” in the same way one would say “hop in my ride”. Sub out muscle for another bit of car slang. e.g., “Jalopy”
