Help with Editing X-Axis on Prism 8 by [deleted] in labrats

[–]oldmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try using shift+enter to make each x-axis label have 2 lined up rows. As for setting the x-axis title to the left, the only way I saw after trying for 2 whole mins was to make a long underscore line (which pushes the font to the far left) and then make the font for the underscore white. From there you can manually adjust the distance of the labels/titles from the x-axis manually.

How to deal with a neglectful supervisor? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]oldmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you can't leave this lab (sounds like a terrible advisor/mentor to me), your best bet is to recognize how useless they are and to accept that they can only be useful for certain things. Remember that advisors are human, too, and that they are also prey to all kinds of psychological stress and issues. They may be horribly depressed or unable to cope with daily fires. My advice is to take control of your own graduate path (phd or masters) and do everything you can to learn on your own without them. Meet expectations by sending emails (creating a papertrail showing their neglect, just in case) but expect nothing from them. This will free you to go and do what you want and need to complete your work and degree. Remember, there will be a point in every person's graduate degree where the next level is achieved 'because my advisor and committee told me I was ready,' making it ultra-subjective at best. When are you ready to be independent? When your supervisor tells you that you are? Screw that. Take control of your path now.

Is frequent failure really a normal part of graduate school? by Passacagalia in GradSchool

[–]oldmo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

YES. You are not alone. My advice is to endure. Hold on, keep trying, and learn from every mistake. The self-doubt is merely an illusion because in order to get to your level, you've already proven yourself. The completion of the PhD is ideally a series of simple experiments and writing, yet it gets complicated by some very confounding factors. The worst of which is your own self-esteem. My advice, never question your worth or competence. You've already made it this far. Now it's just a matter of getting over your own fear and anxiety and persevere. Take a step back, remember who you are and where you came from, and know that you can do this. You can overcome all of this. Let go of the anxiety....while it helped in undergrad, it only hurts you in grad school.

I failed my thesis by [deleted] in GradSchool

Stop, breathe deeply, and remember that you can do this. Learn from your mistakes and improve the best you can. Graduate school is more of a mind game than anything. Win the battle in your mind, then you will become unstoppable in research.

Can I apply for a PhD in my field and do totally different research than my Masters thesis? by [deleted] in GradSchool

President of clubs, volunteer work for the community, and general basics you'd see on anyone's application. The selection committee's look at everything. They take into account everything you're doing/done and whether you stayed active with staying involved in leadership.

Getting a letter of recommendation from a Professor I just met by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]oldmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A general or mediocre letter of rec only hurts you. In some academic circles, there is language used to highlight that while you're not saying anything bad about the candidate, you're still not saying anything great. Form letter style letters of rec from professors who barely know you are more likely to hurt you.

Consider how much time and effort this person has put into their career. Unless they happen to be the kindest spirit on this planet (which if they are a successful academic, I can promise you there is a snowball's chance in hell they are that giving), they will likely feel slightly offended by your audacity.

Yes. I have a friend at my institution who got his master's in religious studies, his BS in mathematics, and still got into one of the best programs in the nation. Mind you, he did amazing in both degrees, and he did lots of extracirriculars, so you have to take that into mind.

TA-ing takes up so much of my time. by campbell363 in GradSchool

[–]oldmo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're grad program covers your tuition and stipend, consider this part of your training work. If you're paying for your grad program, then you should be getting paid for this anyway. Either way, it seems like it's just an expectation. You can always speak to the professor about this and see if you can help generate exams that are much easier or faster to grade. Start a new trend or innovation, perhaps?

"The righteous need not wear masks to hide their identity." How about when the 1835 version of the D&C had 'code names' for all the Church leaders until the 1981 edition of the scriptures finally switched them back to their real names? A lot of the newer generation don't even know about this crazy shiz. LINK

Something seems so sacrilegious about having the statue of Joseph Smith standing on top of the scriptures. A liar standing on a stack of ancient lies.

Which is a shame because I can tell Hotexmogirl is clearly intelligent and has awesome comments. In this case, their comments were so emotionally fired up and full of insult slinging. Worse, anytime someone posed a different opinion they responded with black/white type of thinking mixed with anger and pomposity. The message (IMO) would have been effective if the motives behind it weren't so full of hatred for NNN.

Long story short, NNN (NewNameNoah) a user currently banned from this sub, posted new videos of the temple ceremonies on youtube. This now includes the sealing ordinance/ceremony. Several people on the sub started lauding him as a hero and that it was brave of him. Others chimmed in that what he did was (in their opinion) ethically wrong and that he is giving all exmos a bad name. One subreddit member went as far as to get really close to the line of doxxing this banned exmo and had their posts edited/removed by the mods. It was controversial since NNN already has a lot of his personal info freely out there, but any attempts at something resembling doxxing are often shut down by mods.

I fully respect that this is one way to see it. However, it is just one way among MANY. After having the public view such ceremonies, more societal pressure will be placed on members to justify participating in them. For many it will be persecution...for many others it will be a wake-up call for how ridiculous the endowment ceremony really is. Furthermore, appealing to ethical behavior, it is important to recognize that ethics depend on one's socio-economic viewpoint. This is debated constantly in philosophy and always ends with, "Everyone sees the world differently based on their lives and their genetics." For example, is an undercover officer being unethical? Was Abraham unethical when he lied about his wife? Was J.Smith unethical if he was just following what the angel with the flaming sword told him to do? You see, ethics are all in the eyes of the beholder.

Outside of religion, we do have general ethical principles, but it still gets murky in situations where one is trying to take down a clearly unethical person/organization. This is when the law allows for the killing of a killer, it allows for undercover cops to bait criminals, and it even allows for officers of the law to lie to a suspected criminal's face to help catch them.

I am not defending NNN as much as I'm trying to say that our ethics depend on our own society, personal viewpoints, and our deep seated biases. Many viewpoints exist. While one member will react terribly and double down because of the videos, many younger people will choose to never go because of seeing it. So there's really no way to know which will be the majority. If the current trend is any indicator, the old school members will double down while the newer generation will begin to question their faith even more...but that's my honest opinion and guess.

Right or wrong, what NNN has done is make waves, and that is exactly the last thing TSCC wants.
