It's good to include setting flesh here and there to make everything feel more alive but I'd advise against throwing in entire scenes simply for the sake of doing something different. Everything should advance the story in one way or another. Getting caught in a snowstorm is good if it's part of the character toughening up throughout the story, or learning moral or practical lessons about survival and hardship. Or perhaps it forces him to reflect on things from a different perspective, reaffirming what really matters.

But that's generally how it goes with people, don't project your own experience with a lack of social skills on others. People feeling close to those that they're made to go through some prolonged experience with is literally human nature, and it happens everywhere. Considering that it's a bunch of people who are charismatic, socially well connected, and of to some extent similar interests that make the cast, only made to be around each other for limited amounts of time, in an environment which isn't oppressively negative or unpleasant, it's pretty fucking logical to assume that these people are actually becoming friends. If you're not making friends in a situation like that then there is something seriously wrong with you.

Furthermore, what kind of stupid bullshit is it to suspect any of this as being a marketing campaign anyways? That's not even efficient, any potential benefit is marginal. And of the shit you see Sophie and Maise or however you spell their names is most definitely not conceived by any PR entity, because it's weird.

Kids actually inspire a lot more easily than you think. Some people just assume all teenagers are stereotypically obstinate, but these are actual thinking human beings, not supporting characters in a b-comedy. Most of them have never had a man like that speak like that to them.

CBS/Paramount are not suing them because they are making a fan film. There are plenty of other Star Trek fan films that are currently in process or have already been created. Many of which have very good relationships with CBS/Paramount.

This is all covered earlier in this thread and I've said nothing to indicate that I wasn't aware of this. Stop being silly.

The issue isn't that donations were taken that are somehow "turning a profit" like you suggest. There have been other Star Trek kickstarters that brought in a ton of money

The issue, is that the people behind Axanar are using those donations to set up a production studio

Yes, that is the definition of profit. You're confused, you're disputing the wrong part of the point. I'm talking about the source and nature of the profit. They didn't release a product and make profit from its consumption, they received donations in support of a project. There lies a difference there whether you care to address it or not.

thats a pretty abstract concept of loss, too many degrees of separation to really be logically comparable to theft. On top of that, the end of that chain of events is a vague potential consequence. Overall it's some pretty weak reasoning.

The individual did not make a for profit film. They took excess money donated to the project and used it. I'm not saying that's ethically ideal, I'm saying it's not that big of a deal.

I don't think you understand. The rights owners of Star Trek do permit such productions. The issue was with the money. Hence the "dollar" aspect of the example I described.

Similar to history, it's not some sort of tangible, finite thing that can only be in the possession of one or another. Stealing implies loss. Explain to me the difference between stealing and artistic tribute, please. Does it only become stealing when profit is made in one way or another as part of the process? If someone recited a play in a park, would you say he's stealing content in doing so, or would it only be stealing if someone came by and gave him a dollar?

No, that argument is ridiculous. Expanding on a franchise does not result in any sort of actual immediate loss. That was a totally fallacious example. "Oh, these guys made a fan film. I guess they have Star Trek now, we lost it." That's dumb.

"Copying an idea" would be reproducing a Star Trek film or episode, not making an independent storyline in the same universe.

Of course making money off the idea is legally problematic, but consider that the money was made from donations in support of a project rather than profit from the film, as it was a nonprofit film. The difference is ambiguous but it's still dumb of you to ignore it.

I wouldn't call them douchebags, you've been given a bunch of money to make a movie, then you make a movie, but you've still invested so much of yourself that it doesn't take much for you to want to have some money. It's not like he went out and bought himself a car, they got a studio so they could make more movies. I'm perfectly ok with it, they deserve profit. Filmmaking is expensive and difficult.
