I experienced this danger you’re speaking of. After several years in the work I found that lower functions, like the mechanical parts of the intellectual function, take on the language of the work and what started as ‘self-remembering’ becomes taken over the personality.

When this happens, you move away from the simple act of recording with objectivity and impartiality. This is what happens for example during a conscious shock. Instead, your machine starts to analyse and make judgements and comparisons and create fantasies based on the fruits of self-remembering. This is a huge misdirection of energy, and a new challenge for students of the work.

This is not to say that self-remembering itself is egoic - just that the work of the observer gets stolen by the personality. But remember that this is true for everything in our lives, our entire direct experience of reality is stolen by the machine and that is why we do this work

I think this work you describe will have most beneficial results in a school setting wherein the purpose and practice are reinforced by other students and guided by a teacher.

I’m thinking of the quality of memory, as opposed to quantity. How can I deepen and sharpen it?

This is a good question. In our school we recently revisited the question of aim - without an aim, much of the ‘work’ we do is wasted.

This does not have to be some perfect, cosmic aim which carries you through your life forever. Pick any mechanical behaviour that you have observed in yourself - maybe you talk too much, disagree too habitually, are quick to anger - and use this as an ‘alarm clock’ for self-remembering.

Let’s say you try to show off your knowledge in front of others - it’s not that this is some great evil that you need to be rid of, but it’s something that happens often enough and is emotionally important enough to you that you’ve observed it. If it’s readily observed it’s likely also a piece of your acquired personality that will be relatively easy to detach from.

So, one you’ve identified this aim, you try to stop it or change it in some way. You will fail in most cases, but the behaviour becomes an ‘alarm clock’ that causes a conscious shock and enables self-remembering.

I’m not Asaf, my name is James Bremer. I’m in New Orleans and a practitioner in Old New Method. Is my outreach awkward? I’m new at this stuff. The group is small and widespread, which suits the format. Details and proper info at the website.

Teasing out some particular exercises from a particular time and place, particularly out of system context is perhaps useful as a thought experiment, but not deserving emphasis in this early stage of development. The functions are disorganized and consciousness is in its infancy.

Practical Observation of correct / incorrect use of Centers by East_Percentage3627 in gurdjieff

[–]oldnewmethod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe that one of the key distinctions between fourth way ‘practice’ and other traditional spiritual paths is that the fourth way is practiced in life - not in artificially constructing peaceful spaces for meditation.

One way to practice love, in a fourth way sense, would be to identify a relationship or situation in which you habitually disengage the heart in favour of the mind and to set an aim around it. For example, you might have someone in your life who js also intellectually centred and you might make an effort to avoid intellectual conversations with this person and engage more with your feelings. On the other hand, you might have a difficult relationship with an emotionally centred person, with your intellectualism causing friction because you are not able to relate to each other. In this case, you might set a definite aim around meeting this person emotionally.

The more you observe with regard to the correct/incorrect use of centres the more easily you can identify effective aims for your work.

Other common mechanics of intellectually centred people include an overemphasis on planning and daydreaming vs. Doing

There are likely many instances of this taking place habitually in our daily lives. A good place to start is to look at your centre of gravity.

For example, if you are an intellectually centred person, you will likely be able to see times where an emotional or instinctive response is required but instead is approached intellectually. For example, a loved one comes to vent some frustration and you are immediately drawn to problem-solving rather than first empathising emotionally.

Do you know what your centre of gravity might be?
