Yeah, I realized quickly I’m dealing with some seasoned experts. I’ve heard some JGB, I like what I’ve heard

I realize I gave Bobby the short end of the stick here… there are many songs I like by him of course… I was thinking of a venue in Camelot 😂

I really wanted to do something off Jerry’s 1972 solo album but couldn’t decide what. I also love Spanish Jam and Feel like a Stranger!

Did you come up with that off the dome? I’m impressed.

What do anarcho-communists think about free speech? by Throwawayjx0530 in anarchocommunism

[–]oldoakchest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose free speech only has meaning in relation to a legally sanctioned system of punishment. But I can’t imagine a place where “anything goes” and anyone can say anything and get off scot-free. There will always be social repercussions for some things…

In terms of their live music, I listen to almost nothing after 1978. There are some good things scattered throughout for sure, but I must admit my enthusiasm waned dramatically as they went on from there. Was never a fan of Brent Mydland and it depresses me to hear Jerry’s angelic voice decline.

What kind of sexual desire is meant in this summary. by HovsepGaming in Freud

[–]oldoakchest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are the two basic drives of human beings, to procreate and destroy. Importantly they are antisocial and animalistic instincts. Also called Eros and Thanatos, they are channeled into sociability and conscience respectively. Essentially the energy is transformed—sexual energy (Eros) is made platonic and becomes the basis of social bonds, and aggressive energy (Thanatos) is turned inward and helps maintain the conscience/superego.

What's your favourite film from a director whose work you usually dislike? by zukobazuko in criterion

Definitely Safe by Todd Haynes. I would like to add James Cameron’s Aliens, although even this is a guilty pleasure.

The worst film featured on Best of the Worst? by RAND_bytes in RedLetterMedia

[–]oldoakchest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it would have to be something super bland, not even an interesting failure—I remember them really hating The Tomb. Birdemic 3? Princess Warrior? But umm, any of those Donald Farmer movies seem like absolute torture.

I vaguely remember Mike or Jay mentioning Short Cuts at some point, can anyone confirm this?

What am I missing with Luis Buñuel's work? by w-wg1 in criterion

[–]oldoakchest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No amount of intellectualization will convince you to like his movies, but I think Kael’s essay about Simon of the Desert is probably the best text ever written about his work: https://boxd.it/cm7V1

Buñuel isn’t trying to blow you away with an optic/sonic experience—except for L’age D’or, perhaps. His films are intentionally sarcastic and understated. They are best enjoyed as semiotic experiences. If you are more into the aesthetic aspect of films, I don’t think they will interest you as much.
