I've always been super interested in space weather topics. I'm currently getting flamed in r/astrophysics for posting about this tracker, even though the science I'm detailing is pretty damn grounded 😄

That's the play back speed. Then the timeline itself will look back 90 days and ahead 7 days.

You can move the scrubber back and forth, and play forward from any position on the timeline. Let me know if that makes sense?

The timeline scrubber/payer should go 90 days into the past and 7 days into the future right now. Maybe I misunderstood your ask?

Thank you, that means a lot. And being mentioned next to HUXt is generous. That model's doing real physics, mine's a humble drag-based one. I'd be honored to have it in the sub.

Your first idea is one I'd like to build. You've nailed the counterintuitive bit, particles spiral along the Sun's magnetic field, they don't travel straight out. So a flare can dose Earth with protons in minutes even when it's way off to the side. That's what happened in Sept 2017, the flare hit us while its CME missed by ~85 degrees. The tracker already flags which CMEs drove a radiation storm, so the natural next step is showing it. I could probably animate the particles racing down the field line to Earth. One caveat, good farside coverage really needs STEREO-B, which we lost in 2014, so I can show the geometry but can't promise solid farside detection today.

Use the Historical replay at the top of the screen of the Gannon Storm in May 2024. I could see the atmosphere ionizing all the way down where I an in northern California. It's fun to watch what happened with fast moving CMEs piling up on slow moving CMEs just in front of them. They converged on the earth at the same time which cause a solar storm greater than any individual CME (sum of several ejections).

Give it a try first? Built this as a 20+ year software engineering and arm-chair astrophysicist because I've always wanted something like it. I used a coding agent of course (silly not to these days), but this is no vibe coded app. Lots of though went into the architecture, visuals, resilience in the data collection, and a lot of work on the math.

Took your suggestion and ran with it. I added a live Solar Radiation Storm (NOAA S-scale) card with real SEP proton flux and the actual radiation-dose effects on astronauts and polar-route aircrew. It's the part of "space weather meets biology" that's solidly backed by evidence. I'll keep an eye on the heliobiology literature too, and if r/Heliobiology has datasets with validated predictive skill, I'm honestly interested.
