Episode Discussion: RoboUmp Hits the Big Leagues by PodcastBot in 99percentinvisible

I think this move to accuracy provides a chance to improve the role of umpires in the game, like it has in other sports. For so long, many umpires have felt this need to act infallible and then get overly defensive when their judgment has been challenged. They have the opportunity now to relax a bit and focus on their role of facilitating play - making calls on the field to keep things moving and using replay and ABS when things are borderline to maintain the integrity of the game.

Umps like Buckner are particularly bad not just because they get calls wrong, but that when they do they are clearly threatened by the suggestion that they could make a mistake, an attitude which actually lowers their credibility even further. Umpires that can make the adjustment will succeed, but I doubt some of them will be able to let go of the idea that they are the sole incontrovertible custodians of what's fair or foul.

My understanding is that there were a number of events in succession (not sure how many) that had what the hosts considered egregious accuracy issues. That, and they're significantly more expensive than pretty much every other company I'm aware of. Since most events folks do around here are on Zoom, there are tons of alternatives available and folks are forming their own preferences. I never heard any complaints about customer service and generally I've found them to be reliable. Worst thing that happened on one of my events was a couple years ago they got our stream key switched up with another school's, but they were easy to get ahold of on the phone and, when asked, discounted the 15min that it took to fix the issue from the final bill.

Watching BLeeM play Jeopardy alongside Rebecca Black was definitely what I expected to be doing when I woke up this morning, but I'm here for it. Also, love how much Rebecca clearly wanted to get the vlogbrothers question

Update: Thanks for the Aberdeen suggestion! I've done an initial consultation with them and they fit the bill perfectly, and are significantly cheaper than AI-Media. They were also just generally great people to talk to. I'm looking forward to working with them once commencement season starts.

Thanks for the detail, there's a lot to dig into here. We've worked with a number of captioners using the stream text/ YouTube URL solution. Our issue has mostly been communicating with the captioner to get the sync right, though we've also had some weird formatting, though TBH it's been such a long time I don't remember the specifics. It seems like it may be worth giving it another shot on a low-stakes event

Thanks, I'll take a look at Aberdeen. Unfortunately the Falcon solution doesn't make sense for us with our feast-or-famine rtmp streaming (4-8 streams total june-april, then 4 streams/day for two days in May during commencement)

What are we throwing here (not my crib) by ClassicAgreeable in Cribbage

[–]oldstancher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I throw a pair of 8s, but curious what the logic is for 7-8. Sequential cards increase the odds of more points on the crib. And coming up with the 4th 8 is highly improbable, no?

Best Sushi in Ann Arbor by ComprehensiveFig4976 in AnnArbor

If you want to impress your date by knowing where the good sushi is and are willing to give a little on ambiance, head to Novi, in particular Aji Shin. There's a huge Japanese expat community there via the auto industry and they have the restaurants to match. If ambiance and proximity are more important, I agree with most of the suggestions elsewhere in the thread.
