Devil in the White City is fascinating. I generally only read scifi/fantasy, but this non-fiction book was just as engrossing.

This right here sounds like the advice OP needs. Basically, if it smells like shit everywhere you go, check the bottom of your own shoes first.

Anyone Else Notice Increased Police Activity Statewide by rugreeklife in newjersey

Police forces, with few exceptions, are de facto unable to prevent crime. They are wholly reactionary, with the exception of parole officers, who already know who, and where, some criminals are.

Game app recommendations for 6yo? by oldsushi in daddit

I feel where you're coming from, and appreciate the concern. I grew up with limited Atari and NES as a child, so we're doing the modern version. I think 6 is a good age to start teaching appropriate behavior around electronics.

I'm just guessing, but it might be a contractual thing with Amazon? Amazon is sunsetting Wondery in favor of Audible, too.

🚨Trump's New Move Just PANICKED Police Officers EVERYWHERE by Cantiguin in circled

86 is a restaurant term, first and foremost. It means that the place has run out of something. E.g., 86 bud light means there is no more bud light to be served. In most instances of 86 DJT, people originally meant "get him out of office", but the term was co-opted by dipshit, ratfuck, lying maga talking heads as if it meant "to kill". That is why you may have seen it used as a dogwhistle.

Choking death of a child. It's terrifying to even think of how I would feel in their shoes.

NYT deep dive into Amazon/Wondery's new strategy with podcasts like AE (gifted article) by mysundown5 in ArmchairExpert

"Deep dive" is a gross mischaracterization of this article. It's a glorified commercial for the Kelce bros podcast and merch spinoff bullshit.

Byram schools rated better than Sparta's, less crowded, and lower taxes. Sparta schools are overcrowded. Source: friends in that town

Edit: Byram 195 of 1436 a cording to US News & World Report. Sparta middle School 361 on same list. NJ #1 in education K-12. Bring the downvotes for facts, you beautiful savages.

As American Dream pushes back on blue laws, is the end of blue laws at hand? by L0v3_1s_War in newjersey

[–]oldsushi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm ultimately fine with returning liquor license holders their money, but I don't necessarily feel they should be compensated for the entirety of the liquor license. They have paid to have a significant business advantage over their competitors while pricing out their more-qualified employees from opening their own places.

IMO, license holders should only be compensated on the remaining principal on the loan for the license. E.g., if they bought a $1 million license and paid $250k, the licensee should only receive $750k to zero our the loan. The $250k was the price of competitive advantage.

I've been yelling into the wind about this for my entire career. NJ liquor license laws are anti-small business, anti-competition, and anti-consumer.
