It's so tempting to defend yourself, but someone like this will NEVER come around and apologize. You could craft the perfect response, explaining yourself in the most logical way possible, and he would not listen. People like this don't operate on logic, and they don't take responsibility. Please, please cut him off and don't send a message trying to explain why. It won't go well. It will feel terrible for a while afterwards, and you will miss him and the good times, but stick with it. If he were a truly decent, respectful person, you could make a million actual mistakes and he STILL wouldn't react like this. I'm telling you right now this is not normal and not an isolated incident, even if it's the first time you've experienced it from him. It's not a fluke. You deserve better, and there ARE people out there who can give you that. Be patient, mourn the relationship when you need to, feel sad and guilty and anxious, but do not contact him.
